Thanks, although little chess partner could have played a bit more accurately: 5... Qe7 is better than the losing 5...fxe4?

it is called the yanish gambit, i think the best move is d4, but taking on the c6 knight is second best... poor poor chess partner...

It is the Schliemann defense to the Ruy.  It is double edged and still GMs debate its soundness.  The best moves are d3 and Nc3 although d4 or Bxc6 are okay.
