My immortal game

So I played a not so awesome game against a guy rated 700 point above me and won, I am getting it analyzed, but I think I played extremely well if not perfectly (edit, I found a line where white is winning, but it is (less than) far from obvious). Check out the game and tell me what you think.

Good game, it's definitely nice to win against someone 700 points higher than yourself. I noticed Rxc8 while flipping through but I guess being down to a few minutes of time can rush you a little.

However I dont think sacrificing a knight in the middlegame is enough to call it an immortal game ;)

it's not really an immortal if white 'could' have won. however keep looking for tactics like this (overload) - it makes chess more interesting ;)

yeah, I didn't see the win for white until I wrote the article. It actually was only a mediocre sac, but was met with an even worse response

All I have to say is I am sick of people posting their "immortal games".

Very strange to resign after losing a pawn against someone 700 points lower than yourself.

That was my first thought after actually looking over the game.

I agree, however I probably am a little underrated on long chess, but if I were him I would have kept playing. That being said, I probably could have converted it to a win

I don't get it. On move 21, why did white just throw away a piece instead of taking black's pawn?

What's wrong with 21.Bxg5 Rg8 22. Bxe7 (of course, white's bishop is not actually pinned due to the mating threat on the black king)

I don't know I think you seem a bit optimistic.  Your extra pawn is doubled(or an isolated blockaded d pawn-or an isolated a pawn.  Whichever you prefer to consider the extra pawn.) you seem to be doomed to passive defense(the white rook can take the 7th after n-b6 and r-c7)

Sure you have a slight advantage(I would bet if I were to put it in rybka it would be about a half a pawn advantage).  With accurate play I would bet it should be drawn.

Just out of curiosity am I miscalculating again or after n-d4 doesn't nxd4 with nxe3 to follow after g5(with the idea of r-c8+ and after b-d8 and bxg5 win lots of material)

Avatar of SukerPuncher333

Erikido23, nevermind the extra pawn. What I'm wondering is why white just left his bishop there (on move 21) to be captured. Come on, pawn is attacking your bishop, so capture that pawn! Did white forget that his bishop was hanging? lol

21. Bxg5 and everything's fine for white, or am I missing something?

(trying to pin the bishop with 21...Rg8 leads to a forced mate, so 21...Rg8 is out of the question)

I know, I pointed out these things in the move list, If I could I would rename this the "Lucky not-so-immortal game"

I thought the issue was actually 17-rxc8

THat was what I was alluding to in my last post.  Simply nxd5 with the line I proposed above wins at least another piece if I am not miscalculating.

But, yes at 21 at that point your line is correct as well.

I knew you had that was why I was just trying to discuss other options along the way (and at the end)

oh, okay, then thank you.

In your movelist you referred to this line: 21. Bxg5 Rg8 22. Rxc8

I'm actually talking about another line. I agree your line above is winning for white, but white has an even better choice: he can force mate right away! (I think)

After 21. Bxg5 Rg8, instead of 22. Rxc8, couldn't white just play 22. Bxe7 and force mate right away?

Avatar of ZRH

oh, he could, I didn't see that the rook was pinned after Rxg3, Bf6+ Rg7, Rxc8#

then just dont review them, we ALL know that hardly anyone on this site or even in the world has the capability of producing another truly "immortal" game.  so its just an adjective used to say "Hey i played a good game for my ability, im proud of it please share with me..."  dont be such a hater, im sick of people hating others for having a sense of pride in their games.  im sick of people hating on others who would like to talke about who's the greatest to play chess, or whats the best opening.  dont read a forum if youre sick or the topic, ignore it and move on with your little life.  to the poster of this forum, awsome win!  its nearly immpossible to overcome such a rating difference, thats like me beating a 2500+ player and i dont see that happening at all.  so congratulations
