needlessly flashy finish

The reason I call this needlessly flashy, is because I was up a piece and could have ground my opponent. Instead, I went for the king. Not only am I a piecup, but just look at the activity of my rooks.

why is Rg4+ a blunder?

dunce

Think he means Qg4+, no?

tarikhk

i was joking. Saccing the queen is just way more fun.

In your notes, I disagree about 2.Rb8 ... it isn't much of a resource... black answers 2...Nf3+ gxf3 Qxb8, and white's down a full rook with no reason to play on.

Actually... that rook sac looks sexy as hell but I think you've missed some resources of White's that would at least have made you think:

You know, it may have been more needlessly flashy than you realized!

yup. missed that. sorry.

Look at my edited post with the new material... there's more to look at!

Rg4+ is a blunder in the same way that Bxg3+ is a blunder here.

Hmmmm... jeez, this sac is completely up in the air. In my earlier analysis, 4.Ng4 doesn't get an exclam, it's a ?? It walks into a forced mate after 4...Rb1+ ...Where to put the Black king after Qd5+ is critical.

Well, curiousity got the better of me and I let the computer solve this thing --

The sack is sound, but my gxh3 Qxh3 Qd5+ is indeed a critical line. After the check black has Kf8, Kh7, or Kh8... one wins... the other two draw or worse!  If you place the king correctly (mouse over brackets for answer) [ Kh7] ... black plays f4! and now you have to find the continuation: It's not an easy continuation to find IMO.[Qe3+ Kh1 Rc2]

From JG27Pyth's post black seems to be losing: if 3....Kh8, 4.f4! Ng4, then 5.Rb8+ Kh7, 6.Qf5+ g6, 7.Qf7# or if 3....Kh7, 4.f4! Ng4, then 5. Qf5+ g6, 7.Qf7+ Kh8, 8.Rb8#

Kh8 isn't losing but it throws away the win...

3...Kh7 4.f4! is the critical line, and as you've demonstrated Ng4 fails miserably -- if you want Black's continuation mouse over the last brackets in my post #11 ... this finish is quite a tester. I don't think I would have passed.

I eventually found it, but it's a tricky combination. I can't believe I missed 2..Qd5+. Such a massive hole in my calculations. I doubt I would have found the correct continuation had he played accurately.
