Off the Wall losses - Wall loses to Flohr variation

I started adding up to all my chess losses in tournament play from over 40 years of play.  It was worse than I thought.  I stopped counting after reaching over 400 losses.  Perhaps that's not too bad in a database of over 28,000 games that I've played, but it is still a lot.  I started analyzing my losses to see where I lost, how I lost, and where I could improve.  In this game, against Lt Col Henry Giertych (recently deceased), was for the championship of Beale AFB, California.  The winner would go on to the Air Force championship at Andrews AFB.  Giertych had played in the first Air Force championship and played in several US Junior championships when he was younger in the 1950s.  I lost this game playing the Flohr Variation of the English, but noticed I had a few opportunities and he missed a few opportunities.  In the end, I got an exposed king and was checkmated.  He went on to play in the Air Force championship, taking 3rd place and it was years later before I started playing in the Air Force Championship, usually ending up in 5th place.  My record over the years with Giertych was 2 losses, 2 draws, and 1 win.  This was my first encounter with him and I wasn't strong enough to defend my kingside correctly, nor see all the threats.

Have to admit, your rating seems low at this time, but you did great, thought you lost. :) That was a good game.

Very tough game.  You have a great record and history with chess.  Hopefully some of your knowledge will rub off onto me?  Great post.
