The game of chess is thought to have originated in what is now northern India or Afganistan sometime before 6OO AD: the oldest written references to chess date from then, but there are unverified claims that chess existed as early as 100 AD. The KING below is part of a set of pieces dating from about 1200 AD found in a robbers' stash on the Isle of Lewis, northeast of Scotland.
"De Ludo Scachorum (The Game of Chess), about 1500, by Luca Pacioli"
Luca Pacioli was a Franciscan friar and Renaissance mathematician who was a friend and collaborator of Leonardo da Vinci. One of the earliest chess books, it contains 114 diagrams of chess problems drawn in red and black.
This game was played 533 years ago, and for the time these players were surprisingly good. This was before almost any chess theory even existed, and white was able to go through a few moves of the Scandinavian Defense.
The styles of play have changed dramatically since then, and this game is the best evidence I've ever seen on how. These players were likely considered very very good for their time, but would easily be crushed today. Take a look at how the game was actually played then - there was almost no such thing as defense - just "attack! attack! attack!".
Another interesting thing to notice is the lack of castling - likely because of the complications in the chess rules. It was only shortly before this game was recorded that it was considered an illegal move for a pawn to ever move more than one space forward (other than a capture).
I would say that black probably had a memory lapse or confusion as the rules, as they varied even region to region at this time. White was able to take advantage of this and dominated.
Interestingly, the manuscript for this game was lost in the Spanish Civil War between 1936-1939 and has never been seen again.
This is the oldest game I've ever seen on record... does anyone know or have access to anything older. Please post them..
