Hello chess.com community,

As I am interested in playing some OTB again, I decided to work on my opening replies for one or two days. My thought was just to decide what I wanted to play 1e4 or 1d4 - I landed on going back to 1 e4.

I bought a book named "keep it simple 1.e4 a solid and straightforward chess opening repertoire for white" a while back and thought I would go ahead and just look at the main lines and thoughts in the book and then as I analyze my games played - I would get deeper into the lines just from game analysis - I really have limited time to study and openings is not something I want to spend a lot of time on.

With that said - something I enjoy and want to spend my chess study time on is the study of Alexander Alekhine's games. I love his playing style and his annotations are informative and interesting.

The"keep it simple 1.e4 a solid and straightforward chess opening repertoire for white" advocates the following for the major openings:
 * Four Knights

 *Rossolimo and Moscow against the Sicilian

 * Exchange against the French (trying to avoid the French Pawn structure which is not a big deal to me - I played and sometimes still do play the French, although I am starting to play 1 ... e5 a bit more now).

Most of Alekhine response:

* Ruy Lopez with an early Qe2

* Open Silcian (3.be2 4. 00 before d4 against 2. e6 otherwise 2.nF3  3.D4 straight away)
* 3.nc3 against the French

Basically the mainlines.

Since my time does not allow me to actually "study" opening, I was thinking that going with the mainlines might be best since they generally follow solid opening principle and I will gather more information about how to play them and general ideas just by my study of Alekhine.

But part of me thinks that the Ruy Lopez and the Open Sicilian might be to much to handle given my limited time and in both openings the theory is so deep that one wrong move can spell disaster. But then again - Alekhine has figured this stuff out already, so I am learning by osmosis. Also important to note is in the 1500 - 1600 rating range not many people are "booked up" past the first 10 moves anyway so I am out of theory and on my own  early in the game anyway - which is where the fun is anyway.

I was looking for opinions from the chess.com community on what they thought was best for overall chess growth - eventually it is my decision, but I want to make sure I think this through completely.

Thanks for the conversation.
