1600 at last!

Right. An analogy that immediately comes to mind is someone "multi-boarding" 20 simultaneous games of online No-Limit Hold 'em poker versus someone who plays one game live versus one who plays one game online. I don't know if it's a great analogy, but it immediately comes to my mind.

Congrats on getting to 1600 in online turn-by-turn.

Nice post by Till.

I don't believe that means you are 1100 OTB. My understanding is that your 1600 might translate into something 100-200 points lower in, for example, the United States Chess Federation (USCF). I'm not positive about that, and I don't know how USCF relates to FIDE or organizations in other countries. Who cares how long it took. It's not a race.

There is likely no reliable translation of online chess to OTB chess. It is a function of how much time you spend on each move in online chess and how much you use books and other source material.

I agree, but I'm sure there is a correlation. 100-200 delta seems reasonable if you examine the center of the bell curve. Also, my friend and former colleage is a USCF Expert rated at about 2100 and he thought 100-200 sounded about right. 500 delta seems like an outlier.

Yeah, I dont disagree friend. But the fact that it took seven years for me in itself means very little book reference and other tactics , isn't it? The honesty factor is undeniable , I guess!

I'm certainly no chess learning expert. I'm learning how to learn. Every aspect of the game is important. Tactics is a big one, but you can't neglect any area. I would spend more time on tactics than memorizing opening lines.

if i had a time machine, i would go back in time when i was a 1000 rated player

and beat all my opponents with my current knowledge of the force

Till_98

wow today I finally managed to reach 2200 :)

Don´t worry, now some 2500s will comment to say that you are really 1500 fide Tongue Out

(Congratulations! Cool)

Till_98

lol what do you mean? :D But thanks anyway ;)

SocialPanda

Like the OP, when he broke 1600, he was told that he was at most 1100 Tongue Out

probably commenting on how internet ratings tend to be inflated.  Not by that huge amount certainly but maybe by 150-200 points and it varies from site to site.  Even if it's by 200 points you'd be the equivalent of a FIDE 2000 which is still pretty good.

Actually, I was trying to warn him about somebody coming and trying to make his achievement look smaller.

Till_98

I am rated 2100 Fide. But in Blitz 90% of all players have a better Fide rating than their Blitz rating on chess.com. So that would mean that I am underrated, not overrated :).

rowsweep

2100 is a good rating

blackpug

Congrats!!

Unreal. What would 2100 FIDE be in USCF? How much time do you spend on chess per day or week? I don't see that it could be easy to get that high, even if you are dedicating yourself full-time to chess and don't have to work a job.

SocialPanda

2100 Fide would around 2200 USCF.

Vow , congratulations , friend!!

I am not going to detract anything from your achievement! I had a happy childhood, an exciting adolesence, and a contented family life, so when somebody says they have achieved something, I am happy for them and congratulate them!

Pulpofeira

Why should be Till's statement unreal? I know a 2235 FIDE who has been studying and working during his entire life.

Under-The-Tide

can i ask what rating were you when you first joined?

Till_98

when I joined this site I was around 1900 Fide and around 2000 in Chess.com blitz. So I made some progress ;)

Under-The-Tide

Nice! I guess it's very hard for high rated players to raise their ratings because of strong player pools.
