1800 is a significant milestone. I would say that chess gets suddenly tougher at this level. Trappy openings fail to work anymore and you will soon be paying much more attention to endgame theory. It is almost the start of serious chess.
I think that 2000 is the next milestone where I believe a deeper understanding is required but I have never managed to get there to find out!
