Depends...
Depends on the position.
Depends on the pawn structure.
Depends on the location of the kings.

Do you have concrete positions where you had to make that choice? Much depends on who had more material and whether the structure suggested any attack or not?
I had a game here at chess.com...

… where only one file (the d-file) was open, and it was completely open from end to end. That meant that all of the Rooks and Queens would be exchanged on the file, unless I retreated off the file (to prevent exchanges) and conceded it to my opponent. But that would allow him to double Rooks on the open file.
So I swapped off one pair of Rooks (to prevent my opponent from doubling Rooks on the file) and THEN conceded the open file to my opponent, to prevent further exchanges.
I have had situations in my most recent games at my local club, where i have had the opportunity to swap off a pair of rooks in rook and pawn endgames. Im not sure when i should swap off rooks, but in general, im asking... When is it a good time to swap off a pair of rooks, or should i keep both rooks on board? What should i be thinking when i have the opportunity to swap off rooks?
