Just asking...can the former world champion become a participant for the candidates tournament?

Yes he can. Magnus qualified this time, but decided not to play. That is why Abasov is playing.

Don't know why, but my gut feeling says Ding's gonna retire soon.

Gukesh is the youngest in this Candidates tournament but he looks like he'll be ready to retire in a couple of years.

This video of a 35 year old looking baby is probably what his kids are gonna look like. happy

Poor Gukesh 😢

So halfway through and Ian lead by half a point. If I’m not mistaken, I was reading that in the past few candidates, whoever was leading after round halfway won the event…

I'm surprised Gukesh lost that game against Firouzja. When I checked in & looked at about move 25 it looked like Gukesh had it under control & it was Firouzja that needed to fight for a draw. Then I checked an hour ago & Gukesh had fallen under attack, it must've been a time pressure blunder because it all fell apart right before move 40.

Hang on, I just found the perfect picture to make a meme out of.

I was watching it live, and when Gukesh blundered they both had less than 1 minute so time did play a role

I feel so bad for Gukesh. 🙁

Sir Winston Churchill used to say that one requirement for eventual success was the ability to go from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

I guess we'll see if Gukesh is a Churchill fan.

Hanging around 50% is still close enough to have a winning chance at the end.

This tournament must be frustrating for Fabiano as well. 7 draws and no wins; at least he hasn’t lost.

He won in round 2 vs Abasov.

It happens. They play almost every day, it is easy to lost track of their results.

Enough_Octopus

All games dead equal at the moment

ricorat

Equal, but all all pretty complicated

I figured Nepo would be dominating Abasov this time but nah.....

DreamscapeHorizons

Down goes Fabi. Naka now 4.5 out of 8.

MaetsNori

The winning positions that Hikaru and Gukesh created were both amazing.

And Abasov locked everything down against Nepo, much to Nepo's frustration.

It was quite an impressive Round 8.
