A Grandfinals reset happens in double-elimination formats, where a player must lose twice to be disqualified from the tournament as opposed to single-elimination tournaments where players lose once and are disqualified.
In double-elimination formats, there's both a Winners and a Losers brackets.
Players who keep winning in the Winners bracket move all the way up towards the Grandfinals - the one player which makes it there is the only one that hasn't yet lost a single matchup.
Players who lost once move to the Losers bracket and get paired until there's only one left. As such, all disqualified players have lost two matchups, except for the Losers bracket winner, which also moves towards the Grandfinals.
The reset happens in the Grandfinals if the player coming from the Losers bracket wins the 1st time vs the player coming from the Winners bracket, because:
- The player coming from the Winners bracket hasn't yet lost a matchup
- The player coming from the Losers bracket has already lost a matchup
Therefore, the player coming from the Winners bracket only needs to win the Grandfinals once, but the player coming from the Losers bracket must win it twice (as they already lost one time before). A few formats also have different setups for the Grandfinals 1st matchup and the Grandfinals reset, where if a reset occurs the format lengthens up to accommodate the ultimate final decision.
