2025 Norway Chess: Official Discussion Thread

The 2025 Norway Chess takes place May 26 to June 6 in in Stavanger, Norway, featuring an approximate $148,000 prize fund for each Open and Women sections.

Format for both Open and Women sections is a double round-robin starting out with a classical 120 minutes game + 10 seconds increment per move starting on move 41, where players contest an armageddon game if tied.

Double round-robin (show details)
  • Six players contest a double round-robin
  • Time control: 120 minutes for the entire game, with a 10-second increment per move starting on move 41
  • If the classical game ends in a draw, players contest an armageddon game
  • Players earn different amounts of points depending on their results (see Point System below)
  • Check the event's official regulations for details about tiebreaks
Armageddon (show details)
  • If a classical game ends in a tie, an armageddon game decides the winner
  • The player who had White in the classical game also plays White in the armageddon game
  • Time control: White has 10 minutes, Black has 7 minutes
  • Black has draw odds
Point System (show details)
  • Win in the classical game: 3 points
  • Draw in the classical game and win in armageddon: 1.5 points
  • Draw in the classical game and loss in the armageddon: 1 point
  • Loss in the classical game: 0 points
