I like the story how someone found Donners shirt in a garbage can. They kept it, and framed it.
2nd Piatigorsky

I was there when it happened. I got to meet most of the players. I was casually acquainted with the sponsor, great chess patroness and pretty strong player (1900s, about fifth nationally in the women's rankings) Jacqueline Rothschild Piatigorsky.

It's clear from the name plates that this was intended to be a reoccurring event for much longer than it was.

Being Born in "97 - This makes me so envious of the generation gap I couldn't imagine being in that Chessmosphere and the feeling in the air as E4 is played ! Must have been magical and terrifiying !
P.S - Cant wait for the next Batgirl article
Boris Spassky won the 2nd Piatigorsky Cup Tournament, played from July 17 through Aug. 15 in Santa Monica California.
Rather bizarrely, RJ Fischer after 8 round was tied for last place with 3 pts.
In round 9 he had 3.5 pt. and trailed the leaders by 2.5 pts. Fischer then score 6.5 pts. out of the next 7 games, tying for 1st place with Spassky.
"The crucial game, Fischer vs. Spassky, was played Sunday, August 14. A record crowd of over 900 was on hand, and many others turned away. This was the largest audience ever to witness a chess tournament in the United States. Fischer, having lost to Spassky earlier with the black ieces, now had the advantage of playing White. But Spassky had a more important advantage; the one remaining game on is schedule was a gainst Donner, while Fischer had to play the World Champion Petrosian. Clearly Fischer would go for an all out win, while Spassky would be content with a draw."
...and a draw it was. Then Spassky beat Donner but Fischer only drew Petrosian.
Final score
Spassky: 11.5-6.5
Fischer: 11.0-7.0
