3-Move Mate a slap in the face?

I was just wondering if anyone else gets really annoyed by people trying a Fools-Mate opening.  To me its like saying, "You aren't worth taking seriously."  I don't know I just think its bad form.  A cute little trick to show beginners but not to be used in real play.  I mean, that was one of the very first things I was shown how to stop.  What do you think.

Nah.  It just means they're new to the game.  They'll learn if you choose to teach them.

If I knew it would really annoy my opponent, I might actually play it for exactly that reason.

redevil_buska

I cop it so much i don't mind playing against it

Are you sure that you are talking about fool's mate? One essentially mates himself should he play a fool's mate setup g4 & f3.Why would it bother you?

I think you might be talking about scholar's mate cheap combo Bc4 & Qf3 (Qh5). This one is rather common try at lower levels, but I think you shouldn't worry.

Qf3 variation is totally harmless, Qh5 is bit more dangerous, but after you stop it, you'll have a lead in development and comfortable game.

So why bother with it, it is more of a sign of their lack of chess knowledge, not a bad form.

There is a fool's mate in 3 moves, same theme, but white mates.

But again, it is a fundamentally different from scholar's mate.

Fool's mate - your opponent mates himself

Scholar's mate - your opponent tries to mate you using the cheap combo

The moves leading to Scholar's mate (1. e4 e5 2. Qh5) are actually a recognized opening (though not rated as being very sound :) - Parham's Attack. According to wikipedia this has even been played by GMs - so no, I don't take it as a personal offense if someone uses it against me ...

Yeah, but the GM played it for the purpose of creating offense, not due to the opening being sound.  So actually you should be offended because that's how the GMs do it :)

nigg pls, you're 1400. I'd easily beat you doing that opening.

You'd likely beat him, but not because of the opening-- you'd beat him in spite of it.

I must say that I find it funny when people play 2.Bc4 against 1...c6

I suppose I would find it funnier against the Scandinavian though.

Sorry if I mis-spoke. My teacher in high-school lumped all the quick mates into the fools mate category.   And I know that when my opponents try one of these I will always have the upper hand.  But I want to play competitive games where I have to think a bit more.  I don't know, when I played USCF everyone I knew got pretty ticked when somebody tried it.  I was taught you should always respect your opponent by playing your best game and expecting theirs.... I'm not really that mad it just bothered me so I thought I'd ask

On this site this particular opponent is actually rated about a hundred points above me.... Anyway you are probably right.  I guess its just a personal annoyance
