I know most people will say in order to make it to any titled level its best to start young. As I can see that the reasoning behind this is mostly acceptable, I would like to imagine maybe some day of making it to a lower level title such as fide master or something of that nature. I know becoming a grandmaster is like near impossible, but is there any hope for someone of my age, 24 (25 in June) that some day I could achieve this if I stick with it? I feel that so many people play chess and there are tons of people that are good that starting so late in life trying to learn that I'm fighting an uphill battle, but I want to be able to play good and competitively. On a side note, what rating do people obtain before they start playing tournaments and what not? Just wondering what my chances are of being a good player some day... and by good I'm not saying grandmaster, just being able to be competitive and maybe obtain a >2000 rating some day.
You can do it. It's just gonna take a lot of work. I am not a very strong player. I bet a lot of the games I win are simply because I made less inaccuracies than my opponents. I feel like I can improve, but I know how hard and in depth this game is, and I cannot devote my life to it. It's a hobby for me, and i'm ok with studying leisurely and absorbing the game over time. Maybe in ten years I'll reach expert level. To me that's awesome. I guess the question you have to ask yourself is are you willing to put in the time and effort. I really believe it would be possible for someone determined and never gives up. Good luck :)
