OMG 74% Pass Rate - I have spent over 10 minutes looking at it and I can't see how black can save it??

Unfortunately, I have used up my puzzle allowance for today so I can't look at the answer. I am tempted to get a chess board out... or I might have another look tomorrow.

qxe1# It is a mate in one

Had another go and still can't see a save for black !!!

It won't let me see the answer because the only available button is 'Solve Puzzles' which gives me a new puzzle.

I can't believe the pass rate is so high; I am going to have to set a board up because it is driving me nuts.

I don't believe that this puzzle can be solved. If anyone with a good computer program thinks differently, I would love to see the solution in a message.

I can only think that the puzzle awards points for something like 1. Qxe1+ Kc2 2. Qe2+ even though it is still completely losing.

I hope to come across this puzzle in the future while doing rated ones.

Santoy is being sarcastic

I like how the rating keep going up according to the comments. First it was 1872, then 3100, and now 3161.

I am not being sarcastic. I genuinely think that it is unsolvable. Black is lost no matter what.

No it is not

The missunderstaning here seem to be that the stating position shown does not include whites first move at the beginning of the puzzle, which would be Rc2?? I guess. After that, Qxe1# solves the puzzle.

If it was white's move, it would be Rxf8# happy.png

What ?.....  if it is white to move it is mate in one.

But then the puzzle would not work. Like in all of the puzzles here, the opponent play a move first which is not a winning move, but leaves you in a winning position. So I guess white plays Rc2, as that is the only move of white that would lead to the described position. In many of the lower rated puzzles, the first move of your opponent is a blunder, the strange thing is only that it happens in a 3161 rated puzzle

The link presented to us says "black to move"

It's just like at every single other puzzle on the ches.con website: The opponent make a move, and then it is the player's (in this case backs) turn. The position you see if you only view the puzzle here is the position one move before the puzzle actually starts with blacks next turn.

Then we have no chance of solving the puzzle if we have to guess what white's move will be.

Time to close the thread

Of course you have a chance to know what white's move will be. YOu just have to actually play the puzzle instead of just viewing it. (However, a non-premium accont like me can only play 3 puzzles per day, so I can't play it. But judjing form the other comments here as well es the themes of the puzzle, it can only be Rc2, as only this move allowes Qxe1#.
