5-0! How could Karpov have failed to win the 1985 match against Kasparov?

And what if Anatoly had won 6-0?

Then what?

Sweet documentary Urk.

I remember all this stuff happening in real time, before Kasparov turned gray and Karpov lost all his incredible strength.
You wouldn't want to leave your wallet out on a table in front of Campomanes....

they were dicussing moves with each other during the game. totally rigged

If you think he has lost a lot of his strength, you should see his game vs Ian Nepom ....  a few years back.  He finds moves that many GMs would have tripped over.

while kasparovs later play proved he was the strongest in the world, at the time he wasn't.  As fischer said, the russians rigged this stuff during the cold war era.  If he was crazy he was crazy like a fox, because he was dead on right and everyone knew it.

At the time Garry was the #1 rated player, yet Anatoli exposed some of his weaknesses.

Thanks for posting that, urk. I've read about their rivalry here and there, but that was a nice, brief overview. Well done.

This goes back to the times of Fischer and Korchnoi vs Karpov. Karpov was the favourite of the communist party in Russia and it was crucial for them to show superiority of Russia in everything possible - chess, sports, art.

Korchnoi was a clear enemy and a defector for them. Bobby Fischer represented the evil capitalist west.

With Korchnoi as a favourite it is no surprise that Kasparov was then seen inside Russia as .. not really and enemy not not the favourite insider either - half Jewish, half Armenian.

Now he is perceived as so Russian.
After he won, they just got used to him.

Kasparov is a person to admire, not fearing confrontation with the leading gang there even now.
