How do you think the rules would change if the game started with only the following on each side?: 1 King with 8 Pawns on the rank ahead of king.

MichaelPorcelli have you tried playing Chess 960 here?
Gotta good game we can comment on it here also.
Unnecessary pawn moves (that weaken your position) are the bane of players rated less than USCF 1800. At best you lose a tempo.
If you don't have a clear plan, you (probably) shouldn't move a pawn, even if you believe all your pieces have already been developed.
Happens all the time.
when I am teaching I tell my students that when they are not sure what to move the WORST thing they can do is push a pawn, because they can never get that move back
To be honest if you know your opponent hates pawn attacks and has failed with it in the past that is what you play. It is ugly but you get the win. Take the Semi Slav, it has 3 pawns moving early in the game.
Players play the King's Gambit and it has 3-4 pawn moves early in the game. I stopped playing it even against players i know i can beat. Does not fit my style.
As i said before if you a have a Pawn Majority vs a Pawn Minority it should not hurt to advance them foward. But if you want an Open game immediately by all means advance your pawn.
Man you have to try out Chess 960. Just jump in do not work about your rank. It is great practice. No opening advantage for your opponent. The more you play the fun it is. I was horrified to play the game. Then when i found out my opponents were also i started getting more assertive not so much aggressive. Make them play my style early in the game.
You have the funadamentals to play the game, just use them when you play chess 960 also. Great to experiment at taking chances and see how they work out. It is funny to when Knights are moved towards enemy postion early as they will push pawns and anything else to keep them away. Thus opening up their position.
My strategy is always find the weak square in the postion for mate if none of the pieces are made just like the f-pawn is weak. More than 40% time puts my opponents on defense and they rarely get to attack.
my favorite pawn quote in the endgame, if it fits your general plan to get a pawn to a certain square, and you have the option to move the pawn forward one or two squares, and there is no immediate tactics, move it one square. I found this in an old engame book from the 1950's (really wish I could remember the name of it because I learned a lot from it), so it might be outdated.
Sounds like wise advice, not outdated by any means.
Progress made since the 1950s has been in other areas of the game, not in general conduct of endgames
Thanks for this forum i found the idea that should lead to a solution to a problem i had in my game. This was one of best forums i have been on i a long while.
good point. I thing I will need a beginner and advanced list perhaps
