To chess.com and all those who love chess.com

I know this option is been there for a while, but I find an encouragment for cheating. I know both players have access to this during the whole game, but why would you taka a look at the most played moves, the games played by GM and others. You are not using your own brain and ideas to play the game if you use this. Therefore, I would like to ask all of you, old school- real chess players to like this post and to also send a petition to chess.com to remove this option and cancel and make you loose the game every time you check the database while having the daily game on the screen. I know this might sound silly, since you can steal check the database afterwards or before, or even check lichess.org database. But I think that, at least, it would be a way to inhibit the practice. Besides, who knows, maybe there is an algorithm to catch cheaters, cause that's what they are by checking the database. If you don't think is cheating, then tell me, why is that not on live games while playing? Cause it would be cheating.

The site isn't going to remove the option. Daily chess here is a form of Postal/Correspondence chess and allows the use of opening books/database, articles, videos, etc in the game. You just a can't used engines, tablebases, or get direct help from another person.

If you don't like playing with those resources, there are some clubs that play Daily as if it was OTB with none of the allowed resources.

Thanks for the Daily Chess clubs info, however, you did't get the spirit of my post. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to look at it.

Much obliged

The International Correspondence Chess Federation even allows engine use. They found it impossible to patrol a prohibition.

I know it's impossible to patrol a prohibition like that. But I think it would be a discouragement move if chess.com could remove that and at least, make a midification on the settings to cancel and give the opponent the win everytime someone opens a second window or use his account in another device while playing the Daily Chess. It would be symbolic, I know, cause there are still many ways to cheat. But symbols are a powerful tool in a long term.

I think they must divide chess playing section in two parts. 1.Fun chess section where you can use everything. And 2. Serious chess section where you cant use anything to help you out!

I love that idea, too. Thanks for posting!

It's impossible to prevent usage of allowed daily resources. The site could potentially limit it via the game page but doesn't stop anything even if that became an option (which is unlikely).

@6

It will work the other way around.
People are less likely to cheat in the fun section and more likely to cheat in the serious section.
So maybe in the fun unrated section there is a gentleman's agreement not to use anything and in the serious, rated section everything is allowed like in ICCF.

Nonetheless, I wonder why people use these things. It's out of purpose. Chess is about using your own brain and that only. Preparation must be made before starting the game and improvement afterwards. Self analysis. It seems like people like to cheat on themselves, cause that's what you do when using these things. You don't really win, you just copypcat others ideas or the moves of an engine. It's absurd.

In person chess is. Online Live chess is.

Correspondence style chess, which is what Daily Chess is an online version of, has always allowed resources to be used, unless agreed upon beforehand not to. Engines here are not allowed in any games against another person but usage of the other allowed resources require the player to decide what moves to play and if they blindly follow a line, they're going to get a point where there is nothing left to follow and they'll most likely be lost on what to do; especially if they don't understand the plans.

I'm well aware of that, Mr. Stahl. But please understand my position. I'm not sure how old you are, and I'm only 36, but I do remember people playing with honor and with nothing but hard study, reading books and stuff like that, in the old days. I love that way of playing chess, and I wish technology didn't ruin that. But that's my way of seeing it. Yours and others are as valid as mine, of course. But again, like I said in previous comments, it would be a symbolic gesture from chess.com to invite people playing with nothing but their own ideas and brains, by removing all the extras(except the chat, maybe). Might sound utopian, but hope is the last thing we humans can lose.

I didn't start playing correspondence style chess until 2008. When I did, I found out what the rules were for the format and site and played within those rules. Correspondence is a different style of game and not everyone is going to want to use all allowed resources and that's perfectly fine. There are groups of like-minded people and if that's the way someone wants to play, joining one of those groups is probably the best way to get what you're looking for.

Making a massive change to how correspondence works, and has worked for pretty much as long as it has existed, isn't something the site is at all likely to do.
