A Disappointing End To A Tournament

TL;DR at the bottom.

On April 1, 2016, the Toronto Secondary School Chess City Finals took place, starting at 9:00 AM and ending (eventually) at 7:00PM. There are four divisions in the TSSCL, and the top three teams from each division can take place. I am 3rd board for St. Basil-the-Great, in the Junior division. We finished 1st in our division this year, becoming the first junior team for our school to do so.

Each team plays four games in a Swiss format. The first three games aren't important to this story. After the third game, we had 8.5 points at #4, the #1 team (Northview) had 10.5, the #2 team (Chaminade) had 9.5, and the #3 team (St. Mikes) had 9, and the rest were pretty much out.

Our coach left after game 3 (due to an emergency at home), and we calculated what needed to happen for us to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc (our team had finished 3rd last year). We beat St. Mikes in the last game, 4-1. At that point, we go to find out how the others were doing. It turns out, Chaminade was playing Northview, and the game ended 3-2 for Chaminade, meaning that Us, Chaminade and Northview had 3.5 points. 3 of my teammates left, due to the Tournament running behind, leaving me with the board 2.

After waiting for the results, the organizer announced the Senior results, and moved onto us. He said about the 3-way tie. Normally, the record of each team against each other would be the tiebreaker, but since we tied against Chaminade, and neither of us played Northview, it could not take effect. The organizer said that we would all get 1st place prizes (medals), and all would be listed as 1st (or at least that's how I understood it).

However, he apparantly did not have enough, so teams were randomly awarded medals. Our school was given 3rd, though we all played equally as well, and all really deserved the 1st place award. I was very disappointed, and left me with a bad taste in my mouth after playing for 10 hours. Not to mention that they spelled my name wrong last year, so my rating this year will not affect the one from last year.

TL;DR: We played in a tournament where we finished in a 3-way tie, and received the 3rd place award, after playing for 10 hours.

10 hours? Looks like it was 4 games of G/60. That's maximum of 8... but kids rarely use all their time. I'd bet closer to 5 hours of actual play.

Sorry about the medals... the name and rating thing is just odd. I guess you didn't notice soon enough to have them correct it last year? Seems like they should have done something about it for you. Is this CFC or some kind of school rating?
