I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good book to start out with... I've been playing for quite some time, and have a good understanding of this game. I want a deeper understanding of this game. Can anyone help me?? Please... :)

Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move",  "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played" and "Best Endings of Capablanca"  - the extremely anal-retentive chess historian/writer Edward Winter stated the last one is Chernev's best book, no slight compliment coming from someone as fussy as Winter

"My System" by Nimzovitch, you may not grok every chapter in it ASAP but you will eventually if you keep on playing.

AND don't overlook various resources here such as Tactics Trainer and Chess Mentor, both very useful and instructive.

Look around for used PBs at amazon. GOOD LUCK!

the best starting book I could reccomend is Jeremy Silman's, complete book of chess strategy. It covers all the basics, and even goes in depth in some points. It will not require you setting up a board or having a computer near you, most of it can be read right out of the book, which makes it such a valuable assett. Go with that loop!

Start out with "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess", another one is "Ideas Behind The Chess Openings" by Reuben Fine, or "The Basis of Combination in Chess" by J. du Mont, or "Chess Fundamentals" by J.R. Capablanca! another is "The Chess Tutor: Elements of Combinations" by Leslie H Ault. There are some cool entertaining/learning ones too!!! like "The Fireside Book of Chess" by Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld, another is "The Chess Companion" by Irving Chernev, and one of my favourites on the entertainment side is "M. Botvinnik 15 Games and Their Stories" by Mikhail Botvinnik.:)

The Game of Chess by Siegbert Tarrasch, I think, is still the best after 100 years.  If you really learned what's in that book, you would be 1700 maybe 1800.  Get the new notation version though...the old notation is kinda a pain.

I think I started with How To Beat Your Dad at Chess. I really think Silman's Endgame Course and Chess Tacticts for Juniors are better.

To staff, that link is safe. However, it is openly promoting something that costs money. This promotion is also active under his "About Me" section. He has no games played and very few forum posts.

I am sure you see where I am going with this.
