In the FEN system of recording a chess position, it is obvious that the number of empty squares at the right hand side of each rank is redundant . It is of no obvious advantage to anyone. I think that chess software designers should make changes to accomodate this.
For a chess position like the following, a lot of numbers can be omitted .
4R3/pbQ2pk1/6p1/1p6/2pP4/5qKP/PP6/3R4 w - - 0 1
Getting rid of the numbers indicating the rightmost empty squares, we have:
4R/pbQ2pk/6p/1p/2pP/5qKP/PP/3R w - - 0 1
Obviously, this will be less burdensome and saves everyone lots of time, besides reducing the possibility of errors.
