Abandon Game

Does anyone know why so many choose abandon instead of resign?

Are they just being petty?

Because there is someone if he have to wait a lot, he just resign.

Thank you for the reply, but I don't think you understand the question.

Childish people abandon instead of resigning or playing out the game. I can only guess they think it's better on their stats.

Actually, the answer is oftentimes different than what you’d expect. Sure, a lot of people “abandon” games hoping their opponent gets impatient and resigns. Many people even do so as a desperate attempt for retribution after they end up in an inferior position.

However, after spectating my buddy’s games on chess.com, I accused him of being petty for routine abandonment in lost positions. He was shocked, claiming that he was under the impression that upon exiting chess.com mid-game, the app just resigns for you. Pretty ridiculous assumption on his part, but hey, there’s people like that out there.

My advice is to simply block those people. Blocking mid-game won’t end the game. There are plenty of worthy opponents out there who value sportsmanship, so you have nothing to lose by doing so.
