Abandoned game that I didn't abandon

I was playing a 10/15, and I was thinking a long time, and all of a sudden it said I lost the game due to abandonment.  I never abandoned the game.

You ran afoul of one of chess.com's "made up" chess rules.  Believe it or not, there are limits to how long you can think.  I'll get the article....

thank you very much @baddogno.  That article is very helpful.  I must have been thinking 5 minutes on my move i guess

That's insane. 🤨

Does the timer occult or flash to bring your attention to it ?

The reason they do that is because people stall, or when they think they are in a losing position just don't play, hoping that the opponent will leave and they will win D:

I have had about three games where my opponent sits for 25 minutes hoping I lose or just leave, then unexpectedly make a move so that my time starts to run out.

By "made up", he meant that it's not a FIDE or USCF rule.

@RS1650-16k no, i didn't notice any warning,  It would be nice if they could add some kind of warning

lol sorry should have probably thought of that before ranting.

Thanks Dalebaskets that's what I was wondering after reading the link baddango posted above.

Apologies.... baddogno

"Made up" was probably not the best phrase to have used to describe the rule.  Undoubtedly it serves a function in an online chess community not necessarily known for adherence to generally accepted standards of good sportsmanship.  Bit of a pity that it's necessary though...

yup, I've played matches with people who just stall when they are losing and at like the last minute, they make the move.

I just lost because it said I abandoned the game, it said it one second after he moved, crazy

What should I do when a player stopped playing, once he realized that I'm going to win???

Report them for stalling.
