Abandoning games should cost more points

Routinely, people abandon games as a way to resign when they are about to lose. It is a practice I feel unsportsmanlike. It should cost more points than resignation to reduce the occurrence. I believe it is done out of laziness and even a way to get players to not wait out the auto resign so they can score a win. I would love all the time they wasted of mine back, and I am sure many others do. Instead, double their points lost for auto resignation when they are down heavily or checkmate in a few moves. I realize their are technical issues, but they could be solved.

That would have been a great idea. I will agree with you that some people instead of resigning just abandon the game which is bad sportsmanship.
However, there are a lot of reasons why people abandoned games. I have seen opponents with winning positions and still abandoned the games.
Some people abandoned games because of a phone call. Some because of Internet outage. Some people playing with a desktop computer and boom, electricity is out.
