Aborting online game after 2 moves?

Hi, I am new here, and have played a few online games. I just finsihed an exchange french, one of the most boring of openings. Well, of course my next game is yet another exchange french. I made 2 moves, and his 3rd was taking my d pawn. I'm not retaking until I get an answer here. I really don't want to spend the next month fighting this out. Do i have any possibility to abort the game. Or do I just have to play on and consider myself unlucky? If I can abort, how do I do that?

I don't think a player should be allowed to back out of a game just because they don't like the variation of the opening their opponent plays.

If I play 1. e4 but don't like playing against the Sicilian, should I be allowed to abort after my opponent plays 1. ... c5?

I fully understand your "should" point, but 2 French exchange variations in a row?  Anyone familiar with that variation should at least understand my desire to abort it, but I'd like to hear from someone who definitively knows the rules and knows how I can do it if it is possible to abort. I will submit to whatever the rules are and not complain. My guess is that I can not abort it after having made 2 moves, but maybe if my opponent agrees? I have to get this done before my time runs out. Thanks.

Hey Loomis -  You live right down the road!!! A good friend of mine is IM Jon Schroer who lives in Raliegh - I played many games with him when we both lived on Long island, and we've analyzed a ton. You probably know him!? robert

I fully understand your desire not to play the French Exchange over and over. But it's subjective. If you were allowed to abort because it's the French Exchange, you'd get people aborting all kinds of stuff. 1. e4 e5 2. f4, oh gosh, I'm not prepared to face the King's Gambit, I'll just abort this game. 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 ugh, I wanted to play a KID, I'll just abort this game.

Actually, I don't think there is a mechanism to abort games after the first move. However, I think games less than 4 moves don't affect rating. It will affect all the other stats.

And yes, I do know Jon Schroer.

gosh, checsy-poodle-woodle, it makes me feel so warm and tingly that you agree with me.

Yeah, Imagine my trying to abort a game like that in a FIDE or USCF sanctioned tourney.....absurd! However I am asking the question here, for online games, because I am new and not familiar with the degree of adherence to tournament type rules i.e. flexibility. I know the chances are against my being able to abort this 2nd consecutive exchange French. A total of 5 half moves have been made. 1e4 e3 2 d4 d5 3 ed..  Don't administrators read forums to resolve this kind of thing?  Robert

Don't play a drawish bs line in it then.  Sure the first 10 or so moves won't involve much, but you can get very sharp positions with attacks in it.

There's a button for when you don't feel like playing on. It's labeled "resign."

resignation is an option I have considered, but I am a chess player - so wafflemaster's advice is more in line with my character. There are indeed some possibilities for complications in the exchange French. Larsen actually initiated the exchange French and he included it in his fantastic classic book. And like Loomis said, every chess player has variations early in a game that they dislike, so the number of aborts could get really annoying. Anyway, I have 3 games, and one is headed into a French winawer. So I am hoping for my first really complicated game at chess.com. Thanks for the comments. BTW, I am dissapointed that an admin did not chime in with a "yes" or "no". Do admins think we enjoy throwing around opinions? How do we communicate with the admins?

you could alway go for a thematic game setup.

In my opinion, if you don't want to face an Exchange French, then don't play French... You must have faced it OTB sometimes as well, I guess.

Why play if you know what your opponent is going to do. Chess is about predicting the players move and adjusting yours accordingly.

Mouse, thanks for the reference, its a direct and definitive answer to my question. I found where it says that games less than 4 moves are not rated because of your link. I plan to just let time run out (in 2 hours), and begin a new game. Its curious, I have read posts about players that abort games because they are not given the white pieces. My last few challenges have specifically requested that I have Black! Anyway, thanks for the link to the rating rules, and if you read this, how do I "message staff". I've been looking all over for that and can not find anyway to contact them. Thanks again,

Robert

There's a "Help and Support" link at the bottom of the page. It's on every page, but it's not exactly prominent.

There is a major debate going on in Chess.com's Site Feedback and Suggestions forum on whether to elimnate the abort option.  You may want to add your views there.  See:

I didn't ask the question you're answering.

If you can't stand playing the Exchange French, here are your choices:

1) Don't play 1...e6 or 2...d5 (i. e. don't play the French)

2) Resign

For crissakes, chess.com even gives you the special whiner benefit package and won't dock you any rating points for resigning instantly regardless of how much you deserve it.

I suspect the reason admins won't react to this thread is because they can't stand the whining either, but won't offend one of their users by saying so.

EDIT: Also, at least have the decency to actually resign, i. e. admit that you were too picky to actually play out what you played into by playing the French to begin with, rather than let time run out. What is up with that passive-agressiveness? At least the people who won't play Sicilian against me on live chess have the decency to abort instantly rather than waste some more of my time.
