What kind of mistakes would the engine make, though?
Also, preperation against the machine wouldn't make you get an automatic win, would it? The engine still plays the "best" moves, so, I think all you'll get is a draw, or not?
And thanks for the pointer about the Nalimov tablebases, hadn't heard of them before.
Imagine the following situation.
There's a tournament of, say, 8 super GMs (>2700), one of them, however, is not human, but a strong engine. The other players don't know about that though (don't worry about the logic here, this is just a thought experiment). :P
How well do you think would the engine fare? Let's say it's Rybka or whatever Engine is the strongest right now (is it Rybka?). Do you think Rybka(or other strongest engine) would win the tournament? Would the games be close or very clear losses for the human players?
Side question: How much of a difference does it make how much RAM a computer has for the engine? Does more RAM just mean that the moves are being found faster? (please don't insult me for not knowing that)
