This happens to me all the time too. If you click your rook then king (or visa versa) they will castle if elgible. You are selecting your King (or rook) as if to move it, then you change your mind and select your rook (or king) as if to move it. This signals a castle. I wish it didn't.

Hey
Tellytubbay

For anyone following this or coming to the post after searching the issue, I received confirmation from support and the development team that the issue is likely to be corrected in the next few updates.
Excerpt of response from support:
"...I've reached out to our IT Team right now and they told me it's a known issue/suggestion.

They're already standing the right way to add it in the next few updates!

I'll follow your case and for any updates, I'll send them to your email. 😉

"Fingers crossed!

Yay

I often used to do the same. Now when about to touch the rook I always click on a random pawn. Even if the king has not been pressed. Out of habit

Just happened in pogchamps: https://www.youtube.com/live/sGybih4-6kY?feature=share&t=10283

Arrrgh! Two times accidently castling today. Why can they not fix it. It ruins my games.

Scottov

it's pretty simple. you should need to click your king and then where it lands. same as any other move

MarioParty4

Can't you click the king again to have it unselect?

CaptainArchiebald
I usually just swing the king and there’s no problem at all.

yep, I just lost a game again this way. Ruined a completely winning position because I castled the wrong way. It happens when the situation is complicated and you click a piece and then click another piece while thinking. All of a sudden I castle ! and dead. Maybe chess.com should build in some sort of fail safe for this. It only happens with castling. Other moves that make me lose instantly are entirely my own fault.

ForsookTheRook

It's not a glitch. This, touch king, then rook, to castle, is intentional programming. Lichess also offers this method of castling. Unlike this site, they offer an option to opt out of this moronic, perhaps even demonic modus operandi. Least it feels demonic when it happens!

ForsookTheRook

Oh, and by the way, this issue has existed for a looong time. And is just another reason why it's tough for me to justify renewing membership. This site spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on big name chess players, all the while ignoring the issues of the rank and file.

i just started playing again and accidentally castled twice out of 5 games or so. at least thanks to this thread i know the cause now, i assumed it just somehow registered a click without releasing the mouse button.

there should be an option (that is either disabled by default or CAN be disabled) to castle with click.

This is going to be changed so that option will only be available for 960.
