Ads causing games to freeze

Lately I've been experiencing a problem in live chess.  Apparently it's because ads aren't loading properly.  I see messages in the bottom right of the screen that various ads are loading (or "waiting for...) and that causes the game to freeze.  Eventually I'm able to move again but by then it's often too late; I've lost on time.  When this happens, I often see a symbol on the right side of the address bar with the message, "This page is trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources."  I use Chrome.  I've contacted member support about it and was advised to clear cache.  I did but the problem persists.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Hi

Hi again, Simon.  I like your sense of humor.

You can use an ad blocker like I did. I dunno. Previously i was incapable of loading chess.com on my raspberry Pi with midori, but I got premium with no ads and it'll slowly load not very fast though . If you're fanatic about speed don't use windows. Way heavier than Linux. Just a suggestion use Linux Mint and your computer woll run faster overall .

Heya FBloggs. I was reallllly moved by your plea in the LT's book promotion thread about how we should consider posting something in your threads too to boost the no. of posts (I read your post imagining an 8 yr old boy writing that post with tearful eyes, quivering lips and trembling hands) and decided to boost your threads with a few posts wink.png

Yes, apparently this is always the user's fault and chess.com is too good of a site to actually cause anyone problems. The answer is ALWAYS to clear your cache (which does not work, yet they still ALWAYS tell you to do it), yet other chess playing sites (which cannot be named because ... EGO!) do not have this problem, even the ones with ads.

Install ad-blockers. Or live with the crappy ad implementation.

Good luck.

You've got a good heart, Simon.  You heard my desperate plea for help.  Those tears were real and only partially caused by the Carolina Reaper chips.  Thanks for your support.

All good. I like satiric/witty posts in general. They're usually a breath of fresh air amidst all the super serious discussions.

This is a seriously annoying issue, and it's not even all of the ads. Without fail, if chess.com is lagging out so badly that I'm losing games, it's because there's some video ad failing to load somewhere. If I notice it in time I'll just delete the ad off the page, but if one pops up near the end of a blitz game, I may as well just resign.

I also tend to get the same ad repeatedly, so if this happens once, I just log off and stop playing chess. Even as I type this, the text window is lagging because of a video ad that's repeatedly failing to load. If it ever succeeds, I'll get blasted with annoying music for some product that I don't want. I like chess.com, but if this doesn't get any better, I'll probably find somewhere else to play.

I don't know if this works or not, but I just tested something. I went to my proxy settings in IE and typed gibberish numbers for an address. This essentially disables internet access. Then I added "www.chess.com" to the exception list. See if that helps.

Hey, if that works, let me know.  Good luck.

What other sites do you recommend?  IO lose a significant number of games due to video ads loading and want to try other sites.

The staff frowns on mentioning competing sites but all you have to do is google. I have played on a well known free site, which is very good. I prefer to play here because there are so many more members but the issue of ads not loading properly makes playing blitz difficult. Sometimes I have to close the browser and log back on once or twice during a game. That's ridiculous and if you inform the staff of the problem, they'll say the problem is on your end. That pretty much guarantees they're not going to fix it.

If you can pinpoint particular ads that cause issues, you can report them. The site doesn't host or approve the ads so it is possible some particular instances might cause lag.

If they are reported and found to cause issues, they will likely be set as disallowed.

I don't know what ads. Maybe every ad.  I get the message that the page is trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources and I see "waiting for..." one ad or another. I'm tired of trying to play when the site is having this issue. The problem is not on my end. The staff doesn't seem willing or able to fix the problem.

I'm guessing it is a subset of ads, not every ad. One of the main problems is that some combinations of OS, browsers, plugins (including different combinations of software versions) might have issues and others might not, even if viewing the exact same ads.

Ideally no video ads would ever load in Live and allowed scripts would be at a minimum, but I don't have any idea if Live has a different set of ad choices or not.

Beats me but last time I had this problem (when I started this thread on 12/4), I was using Chrome. I tried Edge and experienced the same problem. I reported it a few times. The problem continued and I started playing on a different site.  After a while I tried playing here again and the problem was gone. It recently started again.

By the way, the reason I created this thread in General Discussion was that support wasn't giving me any answers. I wanted to see if other members were having the same problem.

I dug this threat up because I figured one already existed, and increasing the volume of it would probably do more than emailing support. Seems like it would be easy enough to either talk to the advertising company and get them to eliminate all video ads, or else get a better advertiser for the site...

If you report the problem, you'll get a form letter suggesting you install malwarebytes. You won't get an acknowledgment that the problem is on the site's end, not ours. Obviously if the staff doesn't acknowledge the issue, it's not going to fix it.

It  is a way to add extra excitement to a fast blitz game.
