Tips for Blitz

I just started playing some blitz. Normally I play rapid, and I definitely struggled with less time. Do you all have any tips for playing blitz? What should I do differently from rapid?

Generally, don't.

Blitz and bullet chess is very fast and difficult to think accurately even for experienced chess players. Usually, you'll be better off learning from rapid games and not feeling rushed. Some people are way more strict about this than me though. I find blitz to be helpful when used in moderation, but what you want to avoid is making a habit out of moving too quickly, feeling rushed, and neglecting things like calculation, or double checking your moves before you play them.

Playing faster is more about learning more patterns (playing experience) and learning common endgames very well, so you can confidently convert them with less time on your clock. Endgames like how to win with a single pawn are extremely foundational to chess:

Sounds good in theory, but this is like trying to run before you can walk. If you can't handle a chess position with more time (rapid), then you certainly can't handle that same position with less time (blitz, or worse bullet). There isn't really enough reason to "endure" speed chess a little because it's easier to learn "slow to fast" with more patterns in mind than it is to try and learn chess fast and then slow down.

I suggest that players at your level NOT play blitz. Learn to play well. Then you can play shorter time controls. I think that playing blitz before you are ready will actually slow your chess development.
