Agreed Draws

Today half way trough a game I got an important phone call. I soon realise I had to end the game and give my attention fully to the call. It was a crucial part of the middle/end game with both players about even. I was going to write a chat message to my opponent, explain and ask for a draw, then I realised that whatever discussion takes place, a draw request is always the same as pressing the button. Ranking points would have been lost even though it was a genuine case. What would happen in a live game if a player was told drastic news that had to be attended to and the game could not continue? Surely they would explain and agree to draw equally or pospone the game. In this way online chess without human interaction differs from face to face games...Thoughts...

If your opponent doesn't want to draw that's their call.  You should forfeit the game if you have to leave for whatever reason.

Resigning a game once in awhile due to something important coming up won't have any major impact on your rating in the long run. Just offer the draw, and if they don't accept, resign. No big deal.
