They base the "best move" on engine evaluation. So im assuming that your move isn't the engine top choice, even though it works.

No, Rxg6 isn't check so black can turn the tables and win with ....Qc3+ forcing the exchange of queens and then taking the rook on g6. White is then down decisive material with no more attacking chances.

However, my moves were labeled "wrong", saying the rook should check on the knight file and then the queen mates on the rook file. Same three-move mate, just switching the files my queen and rook stood on.

Yes, it happens all the time and such ambiguous puzzles are themselves incorrect and labelled as "wrong".
I'm Going through puzzles doing them and then I come across this one...
But I got it wrong with...
And I'm sitting here going "WHAT!! THAT COULD STILL BE MATE!!" with...
