Alcohol and chess!

Hello all.

I am just wondering how chess and alcohol affect your play? For me it destroys it.  After few few drink I stay well away from the embarrassment.

I have heard from different people that drink sometimes helps peoples' chess performance.  But I guess it must effect people in different ways.  What have you observed or noticed?

Comments/advise appreciated :)

Yes, it's been scientifically proven on numerous occassions I find hard to remember that alcohol improves chess performance. I'm a certified intoxicologist so I should knowWink

I think alcohol will help you play, but stop you from improving. You can't drink and carry on with any kind of regiment or program. You won't retain what you're reading/studying-trying to learn. Training is almost impossible. If I drink and play chess, I play better. The next day, I play worse.

I would recommend drinking less than what is required for you to get a buzz, but only before a tournament game. In the evening, after your last game and before sleep, it is fine. Maybe the last day of the tournament.

The question really is not whether you should drink alcohol to improve your performance, but rather, how much alcohol for the maximum performance level?

Good point! I'm ok with a pretty strong buzz, but a beginner shouldn't have more than 1 drink just to settle their nerves.

Ha ha. Indeed. Great question. Playing chess OTB (casual game obviously) is awesome for me because I don't over think, I'm aggressive and intuition takes over. Online chess? No. I blunder in an easy position, overplay my chances, see combos but not through to the end. Next day, I'm wondering why the heck did I make that move? Heh

I enjoy playing after leaving the bars at night, but it rarely results in a win...
