Whoops, posting from my phone and hit enter by mistake lol.. Caruana is at 2817 and Nakamura at 2800. Three Americans, or at least three players that play for America, are not only in the top ten but also 2800+. Seems America has something to be proud of in the chess world. I can't recall the last time we've had such great players. If I remember correctly, the last American candidate was Kamsky, wasn't it?
American Chess

America just recruite all the talents from around the world, because of their financial status and other things and then it gets credit.
In this particular case none of them truly American, so top 3 is not really American.
I only know one great player who was Truly American, even tho , not both of his parents were, but still I concider him a local as he grew up there his name was Bobby Fischer and I don't have a problem with him representing America . The rest of the players are not Americans they just live there that's all , they should represent their own country !
The same 'American exceptionalism' mindset, that likes to incorporate/ adopt, Anything, that we tend to 'do well' - Also, conveniently overlooks, any of a multitude of areas, where we Don't.. Like, taking better care of our 'poor'.. Who contrary, to popular belief .. Didn't necessarily, become that, because they were 'shiftless'.. But, because, there's Only so much $$$ to go around - After Lavishing 'beaucoup' bucks, on our 'military- industrial'- and political, establishment' ! ] ;
A person is x,y or z if he or she born in that country only. But I guess we all have different opinions.

Not even close. I spent all of twelve months in the country where I was born. I don't know the language, nor do I follow its religion. I have no connection to that nation, all of my roots are here in America. Today I am a citizen and still proud to be one, despite certain recent events, because I know I never would have achieved what I have today in the country of my birth.

the only minor disagreement I have with Mikey is that the idgit we have a prez is a stain upon us.
fact is, nearly 3 million more of picked a better choice. (it didn't matter)
aside of that- I emphatically agree with him. if you Really want to complain about how terrible it is for Europeans to go out and pretend to be American--
you'd better be a pure-bread Native American !

Nakamura's mom is American and he moved to the US when he was 2.
Fabiano Caruana was born in the United States.
Nakamura, Caruana, and So are all citizens of the United States. So if your criteria is birth, then Caruana is American. If your criteria is by heritage, then Nakamura is American. And if your criteria is citizenship, as is the only one that matters, it's all three. I find this thread a little childish, seeing as how So isn't a homegrown talent. Trying to brag about his victories when he only switched to the US in 2014 seems silly. But saying none of them are truly American is just as dumb. You claim the US somehow bribes these players to come here (even though 2 of them were already here). Yet Russia has invested way more in chess than the US has. It's not our fault if GMs would rather come here than to perma-winter.

I assume this thread will get locked, but before it does I'd like to say this country, America is one of the most diverse nations on the globe. A lot of people hate on "Americans" when millions of our population are only one generation removed from THEIR country.

The criteria is not vague and it's not up for debate. Either you are a citizens or you are not. Many people have dual citizenship, etc.

we'll have chess grandmasters in the usa now because trump is president
he said so that we don't have any:

Actually GM SO is not a US citizen, he only represents the USCF.

Also, it would not seem natural for the Russian chess federation to use their funding to entice players to move there. Two reasons: 1. they have enough young talents developing on their own 2. it would seem to go against their nationalistic ideology.

yes, and this is probably EXACTLY where the op's are going with.
Carauna, Raised in America- spent some time in Italy-- ITALIAN
So. Raised in Phillipines- spent some time in America-- FILIPINO
Nakamura. Born in Japan- raised in America- Spent time in America - JAPANESE
Shankland. Raised in California -spent some time in California-- FREAKIN LIBERAL!
we can get rid of Nearly every "american" grandmaster if we try hard enough...
as they are not "murican" enough.
