It was a planned design change. A number of people don't like it, but don't know if there will be a reversion or not.

You can change it back with some small manipulations in the page code. Tell me if you really wanna change it so I can teach you. Will maybe do a program to do it by itself later.

I guess the site stopped doing V3, V4, etc.? So it's sort of a rolling GUI change a la Windows 10 or Arch Linux?

I think internally there are still versions though that may be feature by feature. You can see some inklings of that in the source. Part of the reason to move from v2 originally was to make things more modular and easier to update/add things.
