Anyone able to corroborate this? Seems likely that the a*hole would have had a profile here, once.

I dug through this profile, and found a game against an opponent from romania with a peak rating of 1894, 4k+ games, etc. which is all consistent with the article. So I’m pretty sure it’s him.

That d*ck definitely isn't a chess champion, although if "Putinwillwin" was his account, he's slightly better than I would expect him to be. I can't stand Blitz/Lightning, and that's the style of game which predominates in all of the alleged Tate accounts. If I were to adduce anything from this (and it would be with a low probabilistic level of certainty), then it would be that there's a very cautious, blunder-averse (probably as a result of training to recognise obvious blunders) and desperate (hurry hurry hurry) style at play there. 

I think he just does it for the money 

I mean he's definitely a narcissist (not a medical diagnosis, just saying that he has multiple narcissistic traits), but he's also probably aware of how much money this gets him so he continues doing it
