erik

thanks everyone for your feedback! we are working to make it better. if you don't like the new one, try running both! here is the old one:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chess_v2

personally, i LOVE it! but i'm used to it :D

funny - when iOS7 came out I was soooo mad that i nearly switched to android. now i don't even notice. :P

Thank you for having the option to use the classic app.  Hope this is a permanent thing because I never want to use the "upgraded" version.

Barney-Fife

Erik, Thank you guys for hearing the call for adjustments needed on the second rollout of the upgrade.  I sent in a ticket item yesterday in regard to no sound in live play and you guys jumped right on it and fixed it.  Of course, there is need for minor tweeking going further, . . . but with that said, the app is amazing, powerful and headed in the right direction. Good job!

@erik,

With all due respect, I do love Chess.com in general, I pay a lot to be a premium member, and I do applaud (always have) the forward thinking about chess and communities. But please don't conflate the following, which are truly separate issues:

  1. People's annoyance with UI changes, like your IOS7 reference)
  2. Genuine "this doesn't work" problems (e.g. crashing, freezing, etc.)
  3. People's surprise that they are suddenly using the new app without any warning

I'm sure it is rough to hear negative feedback during an IT rollout (I've been there many times) but everyone on this thread including me wants the best possible outcome. We are all pulling in the same direction.

Agreed!

1. I know that UI changes can be frustrating. I wish we could all be more patient with it (myself included!)

2. Yeah, there are LOTS of bugs. And unfortunately it's sometimes impossible to squish them all ahead of time. But we act fast!

3. I don't know of any other way to roll this out - is there an optional way?

hreedwork

@erik, for part of the rollout, people's concerns could be channeled to more structured reporting (like you have in the "support/help" tickets). And... if you had categories for:

  • UI -- what problem did you have finding or using features?
  • Performance - did your phone or tablet slow down, freeze, crash, show inconsistent data, etc?
Then that would sort out the complaints into buckets where we could size up how big the actual technical problems are, compared to "where did the button go".

For the surprise factor, I was still thinking making the classic one the default, but then "inviting" Chess.com members to participate in a "new exciting beta program" where folks could have access to the new build (like the Google + group which I monitor), and by signing up, agree to provide objective feedback, bucketed into whatever categories are appropriate (like UI, Performance, etc.)

At least with this approach, people are willing participants, and we can deconflate comments into usable feedback to give your development team the best chance to turn out a wonderful Android app!

I hope this helps in some way. Take care...

Erik,

Just my .02 on this whole matter.  I have seen post after post complaining...whining...griping...etc. about changes.  I’ll say it because I know you can’t :-)  I see posts of people complaining about "all the money" they spend to join.  If $99/year or less is that much of a hardship, maybe you need to rethink your priorities.

Me personally...I haven’t had a single problem with the app...Then again im not glued to my phone staring at it constantly like many.  I just think it’s ridiculous to complain about things like no premove...I can’t play bullet on my phone...Simply put, I think a lot of people here are spoiled/don’t like change/feel they were or are being inconvenienced.  To that I will say this. It’s an app that you paid absolutely NOTHING to get.

Instead of being selfish, and whining to the world how inconvenienced you have been, take some time to stop and think about all the effort Erik...Danny...David...Kohai...and everyone else takes away from their personal lives, family time, hobbies, commitments, etc. to give us the best chess site possible.

I have done testing for you in the past, and never expected it to go perfect.  I never asked for anything in return, but you did graciously offer me a Diamond membership for a few months as a way of saying thank you.

You gave some of us Caps, and T-shirts in Reno, without being asked.  You offered!

I wonder how many of those that are complaining also bothered to apply for the job openings that are available, to help chess.com becomes even better?

I know this will come across as harsh to lot of people, but I felt I had to vent, and hopefully make some realize how good they have it.

I can't find an option to play unrated live games in the app. Am I overlooking something?

Peaodobrado

I think the new app is less bad than the previous new app. However there remains a serious gap. In classic app, the tournaments button, allow navigation, almost as if we were on a desktop computer. In the new app, how to access the box tournament results? how to access the results of matches per team? how to access the explorer games inside a game?

we are going to add this back. but you can challenge users with unrated now.

Samsung Tab 2, In video menu names of videos do not show up, just pictures of chess boards. On Samsung S3 names show up.

Hi Erik, I play daily chess on an android phone. Just a suggestion for your consideration:

In "portrait" format, pieces that are off the board are shown as smaller pieces on the same color side of the board. ie, black pieces off the board appear on blcak's side of the board.

Just thinking that when playing OTB chess, the pieces you take off your opponent stays on your side of the board. so, would it appear more natural to display it as such too?

Courtney-P

Can paid members play unrated tacitcs trainer on the new app?  That is the only feature I wanted in the new rev.

machschnell

I have been contacted by Eric to explain my previous post and I hope i have done that to his satisfaction . Yes i agree this has problems and dont like just bagging change for sake of bagging change .

For those of you that play online games on the phone this has been a bit annoying and i am sure it will become smoother . I mean really trying to play 1 minute live games on a phone and you are whinging . GET REAL  its a phone .save that for a hard line on the computer

Eric you are a gentleman and i thank you for your input and questions , good luck

DJAbacus

Thanks Chess.com. The new app is really nice. It's beginning to build in all the features on the main site. However, as expected for a whole new format,it's a bit buggy at the moment, so keeping the classic app as well for now. Patience dear fellows.

Reading all this a bug tracker for structured feedback would be good. You could use the forum for this, as I guess you do not develop on github.
Also, people probably are most comfortable to use the tools they know.

Then, redirecting someone and saying: this is a performance problem, please report it over here, this is a UI problem, report it over here. Please report which device and Android version you are using etc.

It would also give you the possibility to answer to seperate reported problems when they are fixed. Which in return shows black on white that you do act on bugs and take feedback seriously.

(Disclaimer: I work in software development)

These general "all-in" threads like this one are rarely helpful. People that do have valid complaints tend to feel not heard. Anger and trolling can quickly build up by sheer mass etc.

I have always been thankful for any android app that has a public issue tracker. Sadly not too many do this and waste an opportunity to make the most of feedback they get.

Downloaded the new android app but its still causing problems. I know its being worked on, but can anyone advise how to revert to the original app., I can't find it in the play store.
