In September 2012 FIDE lists 1380 living Grandmasters.[1] Of these, 1353 are male and 27 are female.

I guess Ushenina got the title later, so now 28.

Natalia_Pogonina

There are 29 female GMs in the world.

Btw, I always thought her name was Lahno. Now I've seen it spelled both ways (Lahno/Lagno) recently. Which way is more correct, and why is there a second way to spell her name? Is one German, like Yusupov/Jussupow?

blueemu

The cyrillic G is the same letter as the cyrillic H.

I've seen Garry Kasparov spelled as Harry Kasparov... which looks a bit odd to a chess-player.

There's no "h' sound in Cyrillic. So if it were phonetic, her name would be Lagno. But I don't know why Lahno is popular then.

You mean they can't write "Hitler" (Гитлер) or Hotel (Готель) in Cyrillic?

Nowadays, the H sound is sometimes represented as Х instead of Г... but there doesn't seem to be much standardization.

EDIT: Ah, yes... I see her name is indeed spelled Катерина Олександрівна Лагно. With a 'г'.
