i have the adblock..i have been a long time user of this site..both as a premium and non-premium member. ususally there are ads, but they are manageable, but today is out of control..because of ads the page is jumping up and down, so its virtually unusable.

I use both Adblock and adblock pro on Chrome and never see an ad. Make sure you set and update your filters.

Update the filters. Get a cleaner program.
Uninstall and reinstall the browser, and set it to always asks you about anything.
Something probably got into your browser.

With the Hosts program, the only ad I ever see on chess.com and practically anywhere on the web is a site internal ad.  This is the only one I see on chess.com:

It also blocks ads before they can load, so you won't get drive-by malware hidden in ads.  Maybe adblock does that?  I don't know.

I have absolutely nothing appearing, not even that with a simple Firefox+adblock.

If you have the original adblock for Chrome then something is going wrong on your end. Uninstall the program completely and re-download it. I put emphasis on ORIGINAL VERSION (Adblock for Chrome) versus the other version (Adblock Plus for Chrome). With original Adblock this isn't an issue, but if you download the Adblock Plus, I've noticed there is a newer option in the settings that, by default, allows "non-obtrusive ads" - You have to uncheck that option.

I uninstalled and redownloaded the original program a couple months ago (you have to do this every now and then if you are like me and mess with options, because sometimes they can conflict and shut down certain sites), and so far I've blocked 46,000 ads. Of course, I don't have to worry about ads here anymore because I chose to buy a membership. I used the program here before I bought membership though, and it worked.

A few months back you could report anoying adds and even get a paid membership for free.

Yes, most definitely.
Web protection + a cleaner program (you can find perfectly fine ones for free) are more than enough.

Since installing Adblock I could ask the same LOL... It seems like ages ago when I had to put up with banner ads on sites. And in the past few years advertising has taken a wicked turn on many websites, with annoying animated ads WITH SOUND! Thankfully Adblock came along to crush those annoying practices... It even fixed Facebook... No more "Trending" (which involves what Lady Gaga is up to or other ridiculous, uninteresting "news"), no more game advertisements, no more "since you clicked on that, maybe you'll be interested in three other things", etc, etc. Bet Facebook HATES Adblock for curing their nonsense practices.

And what are Facebook's countermeasures?

Pulpofeira

Obviously they do. Who would refuse a fat-burner pill, with the plus of its discoverer being hated by the doctors?

What puzzles me is : do people respond to ads? Suppose they must though, otherwise no point.

There must be some money paid to the site even if users don't care about them or skip them.
Look at the youtubers that make literally hundred thousands.
That wouldn't be possible if they only made money out of ads that people click on or watch till the end before a video.

NomadicKnight

How about television commercials where they repeat the phone number 4 to 6 times in rapid succession? Yell

There is also benefit from general exposure to the ads, in terms of long-term marketing. Advertisers know what they're doing.

What if you are like me and boycott businesses that annoy the hell out of me with their ads? Like Flo and the Progressive Insurance commercials... I would never do business with a company that so blatantly wastes their customers' money on such ridiculously stupid advertising. (and don't even get me started on that midget handlebar mustache wearing 5 star general and his penguin sidekick that are General Car Insurance Co. advertising...)

It's pretty much the norm for online and online mobile marketing to give a basic version which is ad-supported then offer a "pro" version which often includes additional functionality and in which the ads disappear if you pay a fee. If you can think of a better way, please offer it.

To address Kaynight's question, it's not just direct clicks that are of value to advertisers. There is also benefit from general exposure to the ads, in terms of long-term marketing. Advertisers know what they're doing.

Sure they do. Who don't seem to know it are us consumers.
