i've played mat a lot and i kinda know why this is. his account isn't very old so he's played a lot of lower opponents on his way up. also, he plays several lower rated players in an attempt to help them out. not that dishonorable. i know that he tries to play higher rated players but it just doesn't always work out.

Well, let's try this one for you... I consider myself a slightly defensive / positional player (most likely I'm woefully wrong). What opening would you suggest I learn as White?
I would say play Ruy Lopez (Spanish) Opening because white has a slight edge on the winning side and i like that opening because its positional for white and black really can't do anything in the middle game (from my experiences).
But it really depends on your opponent, sometimes they play sicilian so you really cant do anything except follow the sicilian lines.

d4 openings are best i believe if ur more defensive and positional or maybe Nf3 idea would be interesting. To be honest most openings have attacking systems and more positional ones as well. Learn some and try and work out which feels better for u in the given opening positions.
