Hello, does anybody know a good chess software you can recommend?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any, but chess dot com has many excellent features.

Crazychessplaya

Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition. Multiple artificial personalities you can choose from to give you an exciting game, plus lessons and quizzes. The pros will prefer Rybka or Fritz to Chessmaster.

These are some good free ones:

1) SCID (Shanes Chess Information Database) is a great PGN/database viewer. There's chessbase light 2009 as well, which has a nicer look to it but I saw a couple of popup nag screens. I'm more comfortable with SCID though and find it easy to set things up.

2) Lucaschess is a great program for playing against engines. Arena is the best GUI for that if you have downloaded an engine and want to play against it, but Lucaschess is the most convenient program since it has everything built in (engines, tactics problems, etc.). It lets you take hints, which really help out against some of the tougher engines and eventually helps you memorize positions/openings better.

3) Chess Position Trainer is a good program for studying opening lines. I haven't gotten too into it for a while, but it seems to have some useful openings for downloads and you could always use it to save new opening lines you learn.

Those are some pretty useful free ones. For pay, you have Chessbase - THE uber database viewer (perhaps too big), Chessmaster XI for its beginner lessons and rabbids chess set, and then multiple chess engine software like Rybka and Fritz which don't do much for you IMO. You can do well with just the free Houdini or Stockfish.

If you're still learning basics, there's This electronic ebook on our very own chess.com here that seems to have positive reviews. Enjoy Cool

I use Fritz (have just upgraded to version 12). It is very fully featured and has tons of video. It also gives you a years access to playchess.com , which is similar to this site.
