Be sure you know the opening principles:

https://www.chess.com/article/view/the-principles-of-the-opening

Play long games against players within 200 to 300 points of your rating.

Read a book and solve tactical puzzles.

yeah, don't get addicted to blitz

Give yourself TIME to think of better moves.  G30 is a good game.  if you are here regularly "online" where you make a move every 3 days is better yet.

if your already addicted blitz, learn to analyze your game carefully afterwards.

1.      The main ideas of the opening are:

a. Control the center

b. Develop your pieces towards the center.

c. King Safety (Castling)

d. Connect your rooks.

1.      How to play the middle game?

a. In the middle game you need to start an attack.

b. You come up with a plan.

1)      You need to find a target to attack.

2)      You need to find a way to attack the target with our pieces.

3)      The easiest targets to attack are the opponent’s weaknesses.

i.        Weaknesses are the pawns or squares on the 5th, and 6th rank which cannot be protected by pawns.

c.       How do You decide on exactly what to attack?

1)  Attack any weaknesses closest to the center first.

1.      The central squares are the most important squares on the board. (e4-d4-e5-d5)

2.      The central squares can also mean the huge center (c4-c6, d4-d6, e4-e6, f4-f6)

3.      Because the pieces in the center are the most active.

4.      Centralization provides the base idea of the chess game (activity of the pieces)

5.      Attack weaknesses in the center.

6.      Calculate each of your candidate moves.

7.      When the material, and or pawn structure changes in a position, we need to recalculate our plan.

5.      How to play the end game?

                          a. You come up with a plan.

                          b. The pawn structure determines the plan.

                          c. There are two main plans in an endgame.

1.    Advance your passed pawns.

2.    Attack your opponent’s weak pawns.

3.    The king becomes an active attacking piece in the end game.

4.    Rooks should remain as active as possible (Keep the rooks as forward as possible)

5.    The active side should advance his pawns as far as possible.

6.    The defending side should be careful when making pawn moves, as they can make the active side realize his plans.

7.    The king should support passed pawns, while rooks should attack your opponent’s pawns.

1.       Calculate Forcing moves/lines first!

                  a. A forcing move is a move that forces your opponent to do something concrete.

                  b. A Forcing move is a Check, Capture, or Attack.

2.       At the end of forcing lines, the position must be reevaluated.

3.       If you can’t attack you must do one of two things

                  a. Increase the activity of your pieces.

                  b. Decrease the activity of your opponent’s pieces.

4.       To find candidate moves in the end game you must focus on every single piece.

                  a. Start with the King-Queen-Rook-Bishop-Knight-Pawns.

                  b. Calculate all forcing moves even if they look bad at first.

                  c. Always ask yourself:  What is my opponent’s threat? /What is my opponent's next move?                                (This helps to avoid blunders)

Hey Jessamess92, I joined Cc in 2014 and spent almost all of my time playing 3/0 blitz until around this past September. I learned almost absolutely nothing! Now I play 30/0 games for the most part and a little 5 minute blitz. One of the members here gave me the best advice on chess that I've ever gotten. That is to stop with the blitz and play long games, and after each game analyze it without an engine. Once you complete your analysis only then check your analysis with an engine. Back a few months ago I would get thrashed by any player rated over 850 and now I consistently beat 1000 rated players and do quite well against 1150. I know my rating is not good, but I get the same satisfaction seeing myself improve his game as anybody else.

develop your pieces. look at all tthe forcing moves and see if they win. dont play them if they dont just develop a new piece. of the opponent is not developing then just respond by developing. this alone should get you over 1700 or so

How true is this? I ask bc I desire 1700

i don't want to over-complicate the answer so best you just look at these types of videos;

the most important advice I can give to a new player is to work on calculation - playing chess without calculating is like running outside with a blindfold.

Invest some time into tactics training - best of luck!

Make sure you do tatic's and Chess Mentor.  They help a lot!  Stop playing blitz, it's for morons and people who don't want to win.

easier said than done , but for the most part hes right. knowing stuff like pin fork double attack etc is needed too

The object of chess is mate. Solve mate in 2 problems and puzzles. Then study basic tactics and endgames.

I always use the analyze button during the middle thru end of the game. Helps me work on a plan for future moves etc. Great way to analyze to the possible end game senerio's. I do well in the game offline on real chess table, but I do better online with this feature!

I actually don't know if I'm better or not otb, cuz I haven't played otb in 4 years. I meant it was easier online with the analyze feature :)

I really like his advice for a new player. I imagine it will be immediately useful. But it is a bit tongue in cheek when he says that alone is enough to get to 1700.

It's more likely expressing that he's frequently able to get a big advantage against sub 1700 players for not following this advice.

If it can be said that a player needs only one thing (other than the ability to calculate hah) it's probably patterns. Pattern recognition is the basis for much of chess strength.

So learn common sacrifices, learn pawn structures, common strategic ideas and maneuvers in your middlegames, etc. You do this by playing, analyzing, and reading over a long period of time.

If one could read all of this one should instead learn to play.

Just focus on developing your pieces.  Ever move agressive and cover the center at the same time.  You can't win in one move, but you sure as H*%& can lose in one.
