Anyone else feel cheated by those who are quick to resign?

I really do not understand you. Chess is about winning the game.

It's about time someone said this.

This is so hilarious. Someone complaining about their opponent being respectful and giving them a win they earned immediately.

FizzyBand

I love when my opponents resign when they are totally losing. Then we can both move on quickly and not struggle through a obviously winning position for a long time.

OP is a sadist. He wants to torture his opponent. He probably promotes as many queens possible.

Gunther-Ratsinburger

it is hilarious when those games end in stalemate.

TheCalculatorKid

@bong711 why would I promote as many queen's as possible? If I'm playing a bullet game and I'm under time pressure I might pre move pawns, but by and large I'll take checkmate the easiest way I can see at the time.

TheCalculatorKid

@fizzyband who is a 3 point advantage in the opening the same as earning a win lol.

TheCalculatorKid

@igotmange I fully agree, one of the most satisfying ways to end a game is to swindle a stalemate. I've just posted about one in another thread actually.

So has everyone.  It's about probabilities.  If you hang a piece early on against a semi-decent opponent the chance they will win is very high so most people don't wish to waste their time playing on in the pointless hope of those few percent in what is usually some meaningless random online game.  Maybe if they are playing for money or to win a tournament sure!

TheCalculatorKid

@glamdring27 again I feel flattered you have so much faith in my ability to win a game from that position. But believe me there's nothing pointless about playing on, and it certainly isn't a small percentage of times I would lose from there. I've lost many many games from a 3 point advantage.

glamdring27

Well, I'm not playing you, but most people at your rating would win at least 90% of the time a piece up from the opening.  Why would I play on in a meaningless game for a < 10% chance when I could just start a new game?

TheCalculatorKid

@glamdring27 we've only played once and that was a game you resigned after falling 3 points down. I don't put my odds at winning at 90% to be honest. I think you still had plenty of counter play, combined with the fact people of my level still blunder regularly, the reason to play on is to see if you can win the game

Wanna play a match with you giving me piece odds since apparently the side with the extra piece hasn't earned a win yet? I'll win every game.

TheCalculatorKid

@fizzyband are you honestly going to say you have never lost a game when you've been ahead on material?

Signal25

I don't think there many people who habitually resign after going a piece down. Unless one is playing a master, there is always a possibility of regaining those points. It can also depend on the player's mood though.  When on a bad run I've been "guilty " of resigning when a piece down just because I'm in a foul mood lol. Some things can't be analysed; human nature is too fickle.

TheCalculatorKid

Excellent post.

Well, you obviously attach far more importance to any individual game than I do.  Sure, I'll try to win a game when I start it, but if that starts to look very unlikely then I don't care any more.  Playing for my team in Daily Chess I may play on longer, but in a live game no single game I've ever played on here has been so important for me to try to dredge a result out of a completely lost position.  I'll play on in bullet games or blitz games where the clock is a big factor because those games end fast anyway and chances of a win in a losing position are much higher.

TheCalculatorKid

If a game isn't important enough to "dredge a result out of" why is it important enough to win in the first place?

glamdring27

Because I start a game to enjoy playing the game.  Blithering around a piece down just in the hope my opponent will screw up isn't fun for me.

well said... I'm very used to letting my emotions take over while playing bullet. When losing I have to keep playing, so I resign quickly and move on. When I'm winning I think "I can win one more game!" which can have very weird results
