Anyone else hates playing the french defense

Hi, i´ve been playing chess for almost 3 years, i´ve seen many openings but one that i specially hate is the french defense. I don´t know why, but everyone seems to be ok with that. Do anyone else hates playing the french defense and if so, do you have some funny stories?

Preggo_Basashi

I'm not sure if you mean from the black or white side.

I used to play 1...e6. Other than the exchange you can get some pretty interesting games... sometimes too interesting tongue.png so I stopped playing it. Maybe I'll start again actually, now that I think about it...

I'm also a 1.e4 player. It's one of the defenses I have mixed feelings about. I play 3.Nc3 and some lines I'm confident in, others sort of confuse me still.

Yes, my heart sinks when Black plays this.

Just advance to e5 or play d4 on your 2nd move

Smother the French fry

congrandolor

Dont worry, the French are famous for surrending easily

I seem to have my best results by playing the french as black. If you're looking to deal with it as white, play the tarrasch as that seems to give white plenty of interesting play ( also the line I have the most trouble with) . How you deal with the tension on d4 and what your plan is after developing is the most important thing, and there are quite a few traps you need to be aware of. If you try to play against the french without studying the theory at all you're not going to get a great position as some of the moves are not very obvious for both sides.

I reply to the French with 2.d3 and follow up with 3. Nbd2 and 4. g3 leading to a King's Indian Attack.

Here's an old OTB tournament game from the Canadian Maritimes.

If you study the attacking idea(s) and know them well, the KIA is a really excellent way to score well vs the french IMO.

The problem is I started running into people who did this, which I felt like sucked all the fun out of 2.d3 sad.png

Jeeze... after 1. e4 e6 2. d2 e5 you are (in effect) playing a reversed King's Indian or reversed Philidor TWO moves up!... one for playing White instead of Black, and one for the e-Pawn's two-step.

How can that not be fun?

As far as the d-Pawn trade goes... didn't I recently post a game I played here on chess.com? My Over-Protection game?

Hang on a second...

Preggo_Basashi

Yeah, it's not like white should fear it, but there's no more big fun kingside attack sad.png

Yes, here it is:

Black's center Pawn swap didn't suck the dynamics out of that game. One important point to note is my decision to swap ONE pair of Rooks (to prevent Black from doubling on the open file) and then concede the file in order to retain more material on the board.

I tried playing the French as Black and I hated it

rock303

I studied it for a while and then played it but still hated it

Pardon? Isn't White's advantage that he starts a tempo up? How can starting TWO tempi up be considered "wasting a White game"?

I can do reasonably well with most openings, even ones I don't play reguarly.  Give me a random position, either colour, and I can make do.  The two main exceptions are the King's Indian Defence, which I just can't seem to grasp, and the French ... which I just loathe.

The center gets locked, then the wings get locked, then everything gets locked.  The pieces can't do anything.  Both sides shuffle around, doing nothing, and then someone resigns out of boredom.  Here is a typical example:

If I never play teh French again, I'm happy.

I love playing against the french. I use this line:

Gets white a very interesting and attacking position.

Don’t mind being on white side, and don’t play it as black.
