I don't like using them in my games - but I like that they're available.
Are 3d pieces any good?
I love them. They make me want to hold a real piece in my hand. A nice heavy king or queen in rich mahogany with a felt bottom.

I haven't actually checked them out yet because everytime I've seen 3D pieces in the past I quickly decide that they're crap and go back to the 2D board, every single time. I'll never get my head around that one, for all the graphics in video games these days that get better year after year, and yet no-one seems to get the 3D chess board right. How hard can it be?

I think his question was about transition to OTB... if you get used to 2d board, it is very difficult to see moves later on a real board? I have the same question

I know this is a very old post, but thank you Pelayo. I believe you are the first one who really understood the point of my question.
We all (or most of us) agree that it is easier and more comfortable to "see through" a position in 2d diagrams or games. Some players (like myself) find their OTB game skills to be the ultimate goal of all practice and theory effort. In our case, do you think 3D pieces will help that process or that it doesn't really matter?
I'd love the opinion of a high rated OTB player; but everyone else is welcome.

I usually play exclusively on the internet, using a 2D board. Once, though, I went to an OTB tournament. In Round 1, I missed things right and left- I just wasn't seeing basic tactics, and it made me extremely flustered.
By the time I got to Round 2, though (after about an hour of playing in Round 1), I was totally fine, playing at a reasonable strength and getting a well-fought draw against a higher-rated player.
In other words, even if you only use a 2D board online, then you can try running a practice game on a real chessboard before OTB events. Your vision will adjust just fine. I can't say whether or not you'll need less practice time if you use a 3D board online, though: go ahead and experiment if you want to.
i find them distracting and hard to play with but that's just me
3D pieces just hurt my vision :P
I think 2D is more beneficial to your chess view than 3D...

I have a nice selection of 3D pieces on my Chessmaster. If the day ever comes when websites like this can provide the same kind of quality 3D selection like that, then I'm on board. But so far. I haven't found a website with decent 3D pieces.
I'm not tech-savvy but I'm guessing it takes a lot of code to provide that kind of quality. So, it's just not practical at this point in time. But that day will come & when it does then 2D will seem a quaint relic of the past.
Hi everyone, firstly I'd like to salute our Chess.com staff for their effort in adding new features and constantly improvng the site. But now to the point... I've read someone posting he liked 3d pieces because he felt playing with them was beneficial to his OTB vision. What do you think of this?
I guess most of us agree that it's easier to "see" through the position with 2d pieces, but if 3d pieces help my OTB vision, then by all means I'll stick to them.
