Are chess openings and their board layouts copyrighted

I am just wondering if I can use popular chess openings and their board layouts in my project.

Say, London system, Kings Indian defence, petrov defense, queens gambit etc. Are the basic board layout illustration and name  copyrighted?

Some names include player's last name (e.g. Marshall Gambit). what about such openings and gambits. (What about the new Botez gambit?)

I am not talking about games/moves by players, just general well-known openings and gambits.

Almost every opening had been played first over 100 years ago. Even if it were possible, which it’s not, the copyright would be expired by now.

I am trying to get a patent on a chess tactic I call a “pin”. If I succeed you will have to pay me $.05 every time you use one.

As far as copyrights go, perhaps Mr. Benko might consider suing the river Volga.
