Overall, video games are having a negative effect on our youth, on our culture, on our country. It's like alcohol....drinking isn't inherently bad, but the net effect considering the cost of alcoholism, is huge. And I don't just mean the financial cost. Same with video games. Kids are playing them for many hours a day when they should be studying, getting exercise, and socializing in person.
And yes, if a kid was playing on line chess for 5 hours a day, I'd say that was harmful too. Better than some graphically violent game, but still not healthy.

That could be applies for most things. Reimagine what you said, but replace “video games” with chess. Kids play chess for many hours a day when they could be doing x. Replace video games with literally anything, it still makes as much sense.

I started playing video games in the 1970s.
My obsession with them was always curtailed, mostly because I made intelligent choices.
My online blitz chess addiction is another matter, and may sometimes resemble the dysfunctional behavior of many video game fanatics.
Nonetheless, I made enough time for the study of history that facile cause-effect generalizations are instantly recognizable as what they are. These days, they seem to be the norm. Maybe they always were.

I think your contradicting yourself, your obsession with chess is no different. The problem is you falsely see it as somehow superior. My obsession with chess is far different. I have played no video games, except the Wii, in the past ten years. I haven’t played the Wii since 2019. Video games have never been an obsession for more than a day or two at a time. Even then, it was always easy to walk away.
I play chess online nearly every day. I’ve even played online blitz in a hunting blind in the woods. That’s how obsession manifests itself.
Your main problem is that you presume to know what you cannot know because no one will tell you, and then misread what they do tell you.
My main point was subtle. You claimed people have been playing video games since the 1980s. As often happens, on simple and verifiable statements of fact, you are wrong. The first commercial home video game was released in November 1972. I started playing it perhaps five years later.
Also, everyone in this thread who has played OTB tells you that it is different from online chess. Mostly, it is preferable, too. As you have never played it, you have no way to know. Try it. You will surprise yourself.
I have so many memories of postgame analysis with a dozen people arguing about the position (and no one checking computers). That’s something that only happens in-person.
