Overall, video games are having a negative effect on our youth, on our culture, on our country. It's like alcohol....drinking isn't inherently bad, but the net effect considering the cost of alcoholism, is huge. And I don't just mean the financial cost. Same with video games. Kids are playing them for many hours a day when they should be studying, getting exercise, and socializing in person.
And yes, if a kid was playing on line chess for 5 hours a day, I'd say that was harmful too. Better than some graphically violent game, but still not healthy.
[end of rant]
Are chess players athletes? 💨

That could be applies for most things. Reimagine what you said, but replace “video games” with chess. Kids play chess for many hours a day when they could be doing x. Replace video games with literally anything, it still makes as much sense.

you say “video gamer” like that’s a bad thing
Well. Isn't it? Or, is bullet chess a video game?
Is playing video games inherently bad?
In moderation, probably not. In the obsessive way that today’s youth plays them, almost certainly.

That goes for most things.

I started playing video games in the 1970s.
My obsession with them was always curtailed, mostly because I made intelligent choices.
My online blitz chess addiction is another matter, and may sometimes resemble the dysfunctional behavior of many video game fanatics.
Nonetheless, I made enough time for the study of history that facile cause-effect generalizations are instantly recognizable as what they are. These days, they seem to be the norm. Maybe they always were.

She did that! She's a silly person. A silly young person. No brains at all.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Finally got some laugh by this trash garbage.. thank you so much for the joke.. let me tell you what i mean she.. bro go know whats she and he.. anyway.. responding to an another threaded comment.. yes i did it.. what's the problem.. accepting Olympic committe does not mean we don't have brains foolish. besides talking off like transgender does not make sense.. in these matters Olympic committee does tell the truth

stop making up definitions to fit your needs. a mental sport is not a thing.
Mind sports are a thing though but in those we have quizzes, competitive programming and esports.
but you dont mention chess??? anyway instead of esports mention chess it would make some sense
Read the wiki links. Obviously the five first board games that were in the mind game category shouldn’t need to be mentioned but sure: go, checkers, chess, bridge and xianqi are what was originally in the mind sport official games.
But you are correct, most esports are more physical than mind sport so it was wrong of me to include them in that category.
esports are not physical.. you are video gamer and dont know anything about chess thats for sure... chess is an sport consisting of physical exertions.. even my link is true dont think only wikis are true
they are, they require hand eye coordination.
I get it.. but chess should also be mentioned and dmfed did not

- esports are not physical..
- you are video gamer and dont know anything about chess thats for sure...
- chess is an sport consisting of physical exertions..
- even my link is true dont think only wikis are true
- Some, like any turnbased games are as physical as chess. Others, like cs or tekken, are some what more physical than chess and lastly we have some, mostly dance dance revolution, wiifit, vr and similar games where physical activity for a large part of the body is part of the interface, which could almost be called athletic or eathletics. I will use patriots question: if I call out moves and some one else is doing them for me, am I still playing chess and is it still physical for me? Because I can’t do same thing in dance dance revolution or tekken and still claim that it is i who is playing.
- Played chess long before you was even born and now a days i play mostly chess and duolingo so nah on the whole gamer part.
- Nope it mostly isn’t. As I said earlier, I can play chess by just telling where to move and somebody else can move for you. This is why CooloutAC think that speed chess is a sport, because players have to be quick and precise.
- One whole year has past and I am as bad at chess as before and you still haven’t improved neither your argumentation nor your source criticism. Once again you are using blogs with obvious bias and refuse to read anything else. Even when my links would support your claim, since they talk about mind sports.
I agree.. but my main point is chess is an sport don't take those four inaccurate points mentioned by me SERIOUSLY
The only sport where you can sit down, smoke, and drink coffee during the activity. You can beat ur opponent even if you are wearing an evening gown and heels
What is a sport???..what most people say solving puzzles is a sport then its a sport
play chess with your brain active... oh wait you dont have a brain jk but pls dont take chess like video game its pretty lame false statement only dumb people talk like that.. hope atleast you are not dumb like those video gaming fans/chess haters
You also use your brain when you try to solve riddles, learn math, biology, chemistry....you use brain when you read romantic or horror novels.....you also use your brain when you pray to God as thinking of solving problems in life....
And i don't think you will tell your children to play chess in order to improve stamina and get stronger physical shape
If chess is a sport then solving riddles or performing a religious rite is also a sport
Learning math can also drain your energy like playing chess...and how come math is not considered physical education at school? We are living in physical world

The fact is chess was proven a sport many years ago with argument by definition.
The physical exertion involving moving the pieces met the requirement as well as the
mental skill involved with strategy. The IOC officially recognizes it as a sport worldwide. These are facts that are established. Professors don't allow students to choose established facts for a thesis paper because once the fact has been established, there is nothing left to prove. Class dismissed.
I thought chess was proven to not be a sport because the game itself is played entirely in the mind. There are zero physical requirements. Two players will sometimes play a game of chess with no board, no clock, no pieces, no physical interaction of any kind. Try doing that with a sport. Try playing baseball without a bat and ball. It's going to look pretty hilarious pretending to hit an imaginary ball with an imaginary bat. Plus, imagine the disagreements with the umpire when he calls a strike.
And what does the IOC have to do with anything? Olympic games aren't always sports. They used to have poetry, literature, and music. Are those sports?
What you described is something other than the sport of chess which at official over the board matches require the pieces to be physically moved/exerted.
Chess is a sport by definition.
The modified forms of chess you suggested seem to be fabricated simply for the sake of taking a contrarian view and are not the same as what is recognized as the sport of chess and therefore have no bearing on the debate which was settled years ago in these very forums when I proved chess is a sport with argument by definition.

I think your contradicting yourself, your obsession with chess is no different. The problem is you falsely see it as somehow superior. And you talk of online chess, as if for some reason less then OTB chess. Again, you are lying to yourself which is not very intelligent at all. In fact, its downright dangerous to you and everyone around you because you are misleading yourself and them.
And before video games we were playing board games. I also learned to be on horse racing as a little baby in one lol. This is again showing an example of someone who thinks for some reason the digital realm is a completely different world to the physical realm, and irresponsibly treating it completely different.
My obsession with chess is far different. I have played no video games, except the Wii, in the past ten years. I haven’t played the Wii since 2019. Video games have never been an obsession for more than a day or two at a time. Even then, it was always easy to walk away.
I play chess online nearly every day. I’ve even played online blitz in a hunting blind in the woods. That’s how obsession manifests itself.
Your main problem is that you presume to know what you cannot know because no one will tell you, and then misread what they do tell you.
My main point was subtle. You claimed people have been playing video games since the 1980s. As often happens, on simple and verifiable statements of fact, you are wrong. The first commercial home video game was released in November 1972. I started playing it perhaps five years later.
Also, everyone in this thread who has played OTB tells you that it is different from online chess. Mostly, it is preferable, too. As you have never played it, you have no way to know. Try it. You will surprise yourself.
I have so many memories of postgame analysis with a dozen people arguing about the position (and no one checking computers). That’s something that only happens in-person.

Learning math can also drain your energy like playing chess...and how come math is not considered physical education at school? We are living in physical world
