Girls can be equally strong as boys. Im not saying they always are, but ive lost quite a few games to girls at school tournaments myself. I just watched Alexandra Botez win a bullet match against Eric Rosen, and bullet chess is quite a physical type of chess, no one should underestimate it. Of course Botez was given queen odds, but that seems fair given that shes 200 pts lower rated. She won that match fair and square and Eric Rosen admitted it. There are many more instances of men losing to women. Everybody please stop being sexist and accept women and men are equal no matter what discipline you pick. I can imagine millions of people tuning in to watch an official WC match between Magnus Carlsen and Hou Yifan, maybe they could come up with some system to give Hou a winning chance, like 2h to 30min time odds, or Magnus playing blindfolded. Nigel Short is just bitter and disrespectful cause he has a bad score against female players.

Your arguments seem contradictory and patronizing. The bunny believes in equal opportunity but you seem to be looking for equal outcome.

Do people really feel the need to ask these questions? Ugh.

For attention. And it works.  It does rile up a lot of people

Indeed...

cherry picking exceptions to the rule prove the rule. if you want to feel better, you don't have to register with the Selective Service Office, and you can make babies thru gestation. that's pretty cool. calming breathing works, a technique that requires practice. try it

Men and women are different mentally as well as physically.

In my chess club (face to face) there were 49 guys (at any one night) and 1 girl. She was 85th percentile by the way. There's no "no girls" policy. Anybody could join the club.

I was in a hospital. There were about 49 women nurses and 1 guy nurse.

Men and women have different brains and perceive the world differently.

women are much better at making toast for patients that can’t sleep at night.

luckily there were no male nurses in the 2 hospitals that i was recovering in after an RTA. so i didn’t go hungry at night when watching M.A.S.H. on the hospital tv.

I'm sorry I wasted your time with my genuine question. It's true I made this post for attention. How pathetic of me

That's OK.  We like getting riled up here on chess.com.

I am a woman and a very senior citizen.  Please be polite.

Henry VIII is then pretty much in character

I don't know for sure (since I'm pretty useless) but my guess is that there are girls who like learning chess when boys do. Not as many as boys, but we'll get to that.

By a certain age, all the kids get used to the war-like terminology of chess, girls here it's a boys things, the competitive side is kind of pushed in girls faces and there can be a fair bit of sexism going around, forcing a lot of girls to drop out of chess at an earlyish age. We all know sexism like that goes on which is really sad.

What happens? There are more men in chess. Could it then be that more men encourage their sons to play chess rather than mothers encouragng their saughters? Especially in some cultures back in the day, perhaps it started

out this way if men were just considered "better", women weren't expected to play or women weren't able to get such a free reign on playing so much so often a century or two ago.

My guess is that it's a spinning cycle of sexism resulting in the themes of the game being "more for boys" and then just more sexism, whether people say implicit or explicit, being an invisible barrier to a whole load of talent.

Then again, I'm honestly not the brightest bulb in the box. It's just an idea!

It is a gaming issue.

Games are all alike: they all require and develop strategic thinking.

How many women do you see at your local arcade everyday?

How many women have you seen fervently chasing down quarry?

How many women have you seen playing COD & FNV on twitch?

Women lack a gaming background, culturally speaking, and thus usually lack the strategic mentality common of gamers. Chess is a game - a strategy board game.

That culture is changing now. More and more girls are getting into games. There are going to be more and more female chess players in future.

Kingsgam

could it be perhaps that there are fewer females in chess because they have a higher opportunity cost somewhere else? in other words, are females smart enough to have something better to do? 🤔

I wouldn't say that men are more experimental. Learning another language requires a great deal of experimenting with new grammatical structures and vocabulary; there is a great deal of research showing women are consistently better language learners. If you ask me what is a better practical skill: playing chess or learning a language, guess what most people's answer would be if they did not belong to a tiny fraction of the world population that regularly play chess.

I suspect that the main reason is simple statistics.

Assume that women have about the same aptitude for the game as men, on average.

Assume that about ten times as many men play in rated events.

Both men and women will follow a roughly gaussian distribution (a bell curve) in rating.

The men's curve, being the same shape as the women's curve but ten times larger, will extend much further in both directions, high and low.

So there will be many more male chess geniuses, but also many more male chess idiots.

The idiots will mostly get discouraged and find a different hobby. The geniuses will stay.

If we assume that then doesn't that make the discussion pointless?
