Are sports a form of chess?

I'm mainly talking about team sports, where like in chess, you have multiple parts working together as a whole toward a common goal. Also similar to chess, the result is determined by a combination of the abilities of the individual pieces/players, and the tactics and strategy of the larger whole.

So what do people think? Are soccer/football, basketball, volleyball, etc all variants of chess? And if so, does that mean that major sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup should be run by FIDE?

No.

"Are soccer/football, basketball, volleyball, etc all variants of chess?"

Those sports are variants of war simulation which chess is. Emmanuel Lasker noted that "chess is war". Got it? So in war, people carry out different tasks and come up with the best strategy to coordinate the attack and reach the given goal. Chess is the original war game which utilised the least amount of physicality. Others include Risk, Battleship, A Game of Thrones, etc. So these are more war simulations (the physical sports).

"And if so, does that mean that major sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup should be run by FIDE?"

No. Rather the Geneva convention should run the Olympics, the World Cup, and FIDE.

I'm sorry NE7, but that's a terrible idea! Can you imagine what the Geneva Convention would do to chess? I would probably get rid of the queens, since they're too powerful. Next they'll make it against the rules to capture pieces, since pieces from both sides are supposed to coexist in harmony. And finally, they would make Anish Giri the world champion! We cannot allow any of this to happen! We need to tell those bureaucrats in Geneva to STAY OUT of our game!

Really? No one cares about this topic? And I thought people here were interested in chess variants.

Sport Criteria

Based on the above definitions, we have identified these three basic criteria that a sport must have.

A sport is ...

  1. a human activity involving physical skill and exertion.
  2. governed by a set of rules or customs.
  3. undertaken competitively and capable of achieving a result.

I think any any game can be represented in chess with its characteristic variant. Actually chess, in my opinion, is the most potentially complete game for any representation of any behaviour or/and game. For example: In basketball you throw a ball to the basket to score. In chess you throw a pawn at your opponent's face to win the game. In hockey you try to score a goal; in chess you try to checkmate the king. The way you checkmate is the way you win a game at a sport. The major part of comparison of chess to any sport depends of your checkmating style or winning style.
