Are vampires good at chess?

If vampires ever existed.. and they lived for over 400 years, and a vampire played chess on year one to this day (so he played for 400 years), do you think the vampire would be good at chess? better then Kasparov, fischer?

KyleJRM

Vampires are by nature creatures of passion and instinct. I doubt they would have the intellectual discipline to force themselves to play the right way.

FIRE_FOR_EFFECT

i think they would be geat players whenthey arent killin their opponents.

tornadofdoom

I dunno, Kyle, an immortal who has been practicing since the age of Ruy Lopez would be pretty damn good.

Of course, we will never know because it gets suspicious when the same guy competes in professional play for 50 years straight and doesn't age.

Edit: @the Grimace: I think they would be even better players when they are killing them.

Pretend that the age thing wasnt a problem

Krish30

what if kasparov and karpov were vampires and sucked the blood out of thier opponents but have gone sober from drinking blood so they are aging

mdnssmstr7777

if vampires would play chess they would suck the blood outta their opponents when they are about to lose.

and they have a ton of training, but cant play in sunlight.

so they would probably cheat>

EternalChess

guys..

the main point is would the vampire be good at chess?

Krish30

i would have to say yes

thornybranch

I don't think they would be able to touch their king, because it has a cross on it.

Krish30

true

Krish30

h,mmmmmmmmm is correctmmmmm that

I would have to say it ultimately depends on the vampire in question. Given the vampire has been played for 400+ years, it's fairly reasonable to assume the chess set reflects the former governmental structure he/she used to live subjected to, and (since they are passionate night beings according to almost every reference we know) it would speak to their very core...perhaps as a memento of their past lives.

A young vampire, on the other hand, might not want to spend his scarce waking night hours on a game, to which he might address about as much attention than to, say, Doom. Well, actually he might like Doom better, once the splashing blood graphics might act as inspirational to his own nightly hunt.

So, I suppose it comes down to this question: is Chess important to the vampire? If so, he'd have the time and patience to excel at it, eventually memorizing enough lines to mop the floors with about anyone else (but other vampires with the same degree of determination); otherwise, he wouldn't get to it in the first place, selecting a different set of chores to apply himself to.

A new QUESTION!

What if that vampire was kasparov 400 years ago?

Would Kasparov be better then any1 today?

Krish30

yes easilly

EnoneBlue

lol of course! havent you guys seen vampire knight

i assume there are smart vampires and dumb vamps, i also assume that each vampire is an individual with different talents, intrests, apptitudes and abilities.  under those assumptions i would have to say that some vamps would be freakin awsome at chess and others that would suck (huh huh vampire..suck).  if kasparov were a 400 year old vamp then he would be unbeatable...unless lasker was also a vampire, or capa...fischer would have still gone crazy and wouldnt be able to compete with kasparov, lasker or capa.  morphy would have lost interest in the game long ago, and he probably would have gone crazy anyway too...botvinik would have made a good vamp.  tal, spassky, petrosian, and euwe not so much.  its not that they wouldnt grow as players over 400yrs its just they wouldnt make good vamps in my head.  now alekhine, HE would make a great vampire!  id say he would have his own country by now, he seems kinda like a meglomaniacle type of guy.  he would be undefeatable if he played for 400 years.  steinitz would have written tons of theory by now if he had that long to think about chess.  lastly i think korchnoi IS a vampire day walker who learned how to age his appearance, that guy can still play a mean game of chess and he's like 100 years old!

If you're turning Kasparov into a vamp, at least be a gentleman and give him some worthy competition! How about Capa, for instance? Good old Capablanca would be my first choice to vampirify a world champion.

Kasparov-- a 400 year old vampire is brothers with the following..

Fischer -- a  200 year old vampire, and capablanca, a 300 year old vampire.

Polgar is kasparovs sister, a 380 year old vampire.

Now, who would win if they all played each other in chess?

justjoshin

lol, fischer would come out of seclusion to kick all available arses every hundred years or so, and then crawl back into his cave.

i think i could beat a vamp at chess, if it was chess in the park ... during the sunshine.
